Question I am not a breeder, but...

Any tips for having a dog have healthy pups would be great. I have been feeding my pregnant beagle like a horse, I hope that helps. I don't want any lost pups in my litter.

I would say she has a few weeks left, or so my husband says. My husband has had a few dogs that have had puppies, and to him that makes him an expert in puppy delivery. Of course he also says he is a expert in caring for baby birds that have fallen out of their nest. He done this once where the bird grew up and was released into the wild. 7 other times, the birds didn't make it. :???: Another reason I am starting to doubt my husband's advice is because he told me "You don't want to be around when the puppies are born, it's gross." I don't think so! I want to make sure everything goes well. She hasn't been to the vet since she got pregnant, he assured me that was a bunch of money spent on nothing important. I do not think like this and it upsets me that, well, we really have so many dogs that we can't afford to take them to the vet unless there is an emergency injury or illness. Oh well, not my problem, he got the dogs, and i am going to make him take care of them. I am fighting for a vet visit.

I agree...It seems to me that you dont really know anything about breeding so just to give you some insight. The mom needs medical check ups during and after pregnancy as well as supplements. All the pups will need shots and to be seen by a vet to make sure their are no health problems. There's also always a possibility of delivery complications.I would suggest after this litter you have her spayed!

It doesn't make sense to me either. Either you a breeder or not. It isn't fair to the recipient of the pups. The mother has to be seen be a Vet and get suppliments for healthy pups. The pups need to be taken into the Vets to get checked and if the tail needs docking and to have a health check. I agree with the one replier that said, Have her spayed after the pups are born.

Take care of the Mom and pups, please.

Default Feeding...

Not only do you want to be there when she has the puppies for any possible complications but you also don't want to 'feed her like a horse'. Having singleton litters is hard, but having BIG puppies is just as hard. You want to make sure that she is getting enough of the right foods and supplements but you dont want to over do it. Overfeeding can lead to larger puppies and a C-section as they could be to big for her to have naturally.

I have to agree with others though, If you are unable to vet your dogs, It is probably best you spay her. Defenilty don't take the husbands advice anymore. ;-)

If you think that breeding is something you really want to get into. Start with reading some great books about breeding, whelping as well as books that are breed specefic for any health issues. This will give you information on what it really takes. If you don't want to buy them, Check with your Library. I would do some reading and asking questions before you jump into it though. Takes alot of money, Time and hard work.

Good Luck on your litter.
