Breeding my older Golden Retriever
Can someone help me? We are trying to breed out 12 year old male Golden. He' s a great dog and we want one of his puppies. We have a friend that has a Golden Doodle and she wants her to have one litter. My dog really wants to perfom, but he doesn't seem to know to climb on. He ends up humping her leg, and she keeps trying to show him where to go. Anyone know any tricks to get him to climb on? Thanks!

Your dog may be too old, and may be infertile. Even if he's willing, he may have joint issues, such as bad hips or a bad back, that prevent him from being able to mount.
I'd suggest you consult with your vet before you try breeding him. If he has hip dysplasia, you shouldn't breed him at all, because you'll be passing on a disorder that is painful, and sometimes crippling.

just remember that the older the male gets the less viable he is and the lower his quality of production....IMO, no dog should be bred past 9 yrs for a male and 6 yrs for a female, and then only when in the best condition.....

So why are we breeding mutts? My shelter has about 2,000 mutts waiting for a home, I don't think we need more.

Please don't try to breed your dog! He is way too old, and probably cannot perform or produce now. If you want a new puppy, just go to your local shelter or rescue group, and see how many awesome puppies there are, who are just waiting with anticipation, for someone to take them home and love them. I'm almost positive, that you will find the perfect puppy, you are looking for. You would not only be saving a life, but you would would have an awesome little friend to love.

12 years old?
probably wasting your time cuz he's probably sterile at that age.
glad you waited to try to breed him, so there's little chance of the bitch taking. we don't need any more designer breeds out there. it's hard enough as a responsible breeder of purebred dogs to fight the ARistas. people like you only strengthen their argument.

Yeah, I agree with most everyone here. Your dog is way too old, and there is alot more to properly breeding a dog then mating a female and male with eachother.
First of all, has your dog been checked for hips, eyes, etc? And breeding mutts.. that could cause a whole lot of problems in the end as far as health goes. And would you really be able to find good, suitable homes for all of them? Because that would be sad if they ended up in shelters because of one person's carelessness. I, personally, dont support "Goldendoodles", "Labradoodles" etc. of any kind. Then, that is just me. I suggest not breeding him, and just get a new puppy if you want a new one. If your looking to breed dogs, then try getting a nice, good female from a reputable breeder, do your research, and find a good stud dog of the same breed.

Is your male a champion? Has he been proven in the ring, doing agility, anything with a title? Has he had his hips OFA'd or his eyes CERF'd? Does he meet or exceed breed standards?
If you don't know, or can't answer, any of these questions then he doesn't need to be bred anyhow.
