Is your poodle registered? Is she champion titled (or have champions behind her)? Has she been OFA'd or CERF'd? Does she meet/exceed breed standards? Is she in overall good health? How old is she? Do you have homes for the potential pups already? Are you only breeding purebreds? Do you have a whelping pen/area set up if she does get pregnant? Are you prepared to pay for a C-section? Are you prepared to deal with the possibility of her, or the pups, dying? Can you rush her to the vet, if need be? Can you stay with her almost 24/7?

These are just SOME of the important questions that need to be adressed.

In the mean time. No - I don't believe a female can get pregnant without a tie. In order for him to ejaculate, he needs to be (and stay) inside of her and him staying in keeps the semen from dripping out.

Hi Cherie-ann,

I love labs is correct in stating that is is a very big responsability breeding. But if you are prepared and willing to be there with your dog ready for anything to go wrong, mentally and financially, then a litter of puppies is a wonderful thing. I have actually heard of a female getting pregnant without the lock-on, but as I love labs stated, the lock on is what keeps the sperm from coming straight out. The females rear end can be tipped up to prevent the semen from coming out, if in fact the male has been in long enough to have ejaculated inside her, you will know, as it will start to drip/run out straight away. Good luck. I hope this helps.

In a word, Yes. Your female could become pregnant even if there is no tie. It happens a lot, in fact.
