HELP! Don't want to breed!
Hello,
My fiancee has two very beautiful Siberian Huskies, both are registered and medically checked out. He wants to breed them, and I hate that idea. We are not showing them, they are pretty, but not champions. There are all ready so many dogs in the world, I don't want to add to the numbers. We love these two so much, and I fear about the homes they would get sold to. I have tried everything to get him to change his mind. I took him to the shelter, I had his vet sit and talk to him. I made him watch Animal Precinct to show him how cruel some people can be. What else can I do to stop him. They are his dogs, not mine. Any suggestions?
Help!

He says he only wants to do it once, simply because he loves the breed so much. After that, I get the female (and she is going to the vets!), and he promises to get the male fixed. He always keeps his promises, but that still upsets me so much!

Try this; show him, in black and white, how expensive it will be. Even if you don't end up paying for a c-section (and I'd include that expense at the end, just in case) you can add up the cost of the extra food, the vaccinations and vet checks the puppies will need.
Let him know you won't contemplate a breeding unless there's enough money set aside to cover all possible expenses, like the afore mentioned c-section, and the cost of vet visits for sick puppies. It can run into thousands of dollars. Thousands of dollars you will never make back by selling the pups.
I'd also insist that both dogs have their hips x-rayed and the radiographs submitted to OFA for evaluation. If either one shows hip dysplasia, NO BREEDING! Be adamant about that. It's a crippling disorder that should not be passed on, under any circumstances.
If all of that doesn't change his mind, threaten to neuter him instead of the dogs.

If your fiancee isn't going to consider your feelings at this stage of the game then maybe YOU need to rethink the entire marriage thing.

Great news! We just got the male fixed and the female is schuduled to get fixed in a couple of weeks. I don't think he realized how much work it was going to be until she came into heat. I didn't have to say anything, he called the vet the next day. Just wanted to let everyone know!

Do I sense a bit of rudeness in your tone? If you are trying to imply that he doesn't take care of his animals, you are mistaken. He made the correct decision, now don't chastise him for it. I am on your side. I agree that there are too many dogs in this world. He just fell in love with his young and beautiful dogs, he wasn't thinking properly. A lot of people feel that way about their dogs and think it would be great to have little ones just like ther parents. He realized this was not the best for the breed. Give the man some credit!
