Default Is this breeder a scam?!

They are from New York and they have two stud dogs that I'd like to use. The studs are gorgeous and all, but the woman who owns them told me their stud fee was $800 and then she calls telling me she wants pick of the litter?! And yesterday she said,"Oh, never mind, I'll take the stud fee."

My question is, has any other person out there looking for a stud dog experienced this? What happened and how did you solve it? Thanks...

Do they have all their health clearances (OFA, CERF, etc.) that is right for the breed? Are they champions or at least have a good pedigree that goes well with your bitch and working towards their championships (or performance titles). Do they have the correct breed type and temperament? Have they been tested negative for Brucelosis? If all this is true and you like the dogs I would not be overly concerned as long as YOU are happy with the fee or giving pick puppy.

As a former breeder the general rule was either a fee which was generally only a couple hundred dollars or pick of litter but not both. Also as noted, you need to confirm with documents from the owner of the stud if it has been tested for all health issues pertaining to your breed.

Yes, all the health checks and certifications have been done. They tested negative for Brucellois. The one stud is an AKC CH and the other is working on it.

Are you ok with the terms of the contract or do you have a preference for paying a fee or giving a puppy? The breeder may be looking at pedigrees or trying to figure out training time before taking on a new pup so I would not be OVERLY concerned. $800 sounds like a normal stud fee.
