Exclamation Potential Breeding problem..ADVICE NEEDED

I encountered a problem this morning when breeding my labs. The bitch pulled away as soon as the male ejaculated. The male stood for about 10 minutes (seemingly uncomfortable). As his I LOVE DOGS!I LOVE DOGS!I LOVE DOGS!I LOVE DOGS!I LOVE DOGS! retracted, he HOWLED in pain. I have never noted this behavior in 7 years of breeding. My only guess is that he experienced pain due to the very cold conditions they mated in. Despite having a good breeding kennel, it is not heated and the temp outside is below zero. Are we looking at a little frost bite? He appears fine now, but I am worried that damage was done or perhaps I need to get him to a vet. Both dogs are first time breeders, and this was their first "lock up", despite having been together for the past week.

That is something that needs to be discused with your repo vet. I would call right away if you have not done so already. How old are the dog and bitch? How many people were assisting the mating?

Default Information

I didn't call my vet, as the stud appears perfectly fine. Since this incident occurred 4 hours ago, he has demonstrated normal behavior, including urinating, playing, and trying to mate again (but "successful" mating did not occur). I will continue to monitor him, and I am hoping they will have a successful "lock up" later today.
I am the only person involved in this process.

I would give your vet a call before attempting another maiting... better to be safe! I am sure your vet would agree. I would also HIGHLY recommend getting somebody to help you. For safety reasons breeders almost always have helpers to assist with the maiting. I do know ONE breeder who handles maitings alone but she has toy poodles and can easily get a hand under each dog during a tie. All the others I know, myself included never breed a pair without at least 2 people present for safety reasons and to prevent exactly what happened with your dogs from happening. How old are the dogs you are breeding?
