Question Inbreeding Coefficient- Anyone know?

I was looking at purchasing a dog- however I asked the breeder for a copy of both parents pedigrees, the mothers was fine, the fathers was not.

I entered all the pedigree info into my database and found an inbreeding coefficient of F-32%, rate of inbreeding was 97.6%. But I am unable to find anywhere online how to determine what those numbers mean.

The pedigree held a total of 62 positions for names, only 39 dogs were used, which means 12 dogs showed up on the pedigree more than once. One dog was used 5 times. The problem is, this dog is so inbred, I know that, but the breeder refuses to realize that this dog should NOT be used for breeding. I was hoping to at least put the information together to show her. She claims the dog was line bred. It clearly isn't.

Anyhow, if you can help me to figure out how to determine what the F 32% means, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Great question! I have done a lot of research on the COI and here is what I have found. Higher % equals MORE inbreeding. While inbreeding can be good and if done correctly can help a breeder to much is BAD! and causes health and temperament problems. Low COI's of 0-10% are great, about 10-15% is desireable, 15-20% is also normal but on the high side, 20-25% is high but still farily safe, anything over 25% I would proceed with CAUTION!! I have a dog who is 32% and has some REAL ISSUES! By outcrossing (COI of 0-10%) many of these issues can be changed over time but I would strongly advise against that high of a % especialy if you want a pet you can live with. I hope that helps you out. Good Luck. What breed?

Linebreeding: is breeding related dogs (cousins, etc.) but NOT as related as true inbreeding where dogs are directly related (parents, siblings, etc.)

Yogi, thanks for posting! That is great and explains it well. I am always trying to tell people the differences and that does it very well.

I know what you mean, even I get tongue tied when trying to explain constantly finding myself repeating and sometimes they still do not get it.

Default Thank you

The breeder was kind enough to email me the pedigrees, but after seeing that I brought it to her attention that the dog was very in-bred, she had excuses as to why it was probably done, but I can't believe she was actually using the dog for breeding. She claims that his health, structure, and temperament is what drew her to using him for breeding. But I knew it was not a dog I wanted nor a dog I would want for breeding. I just wish more breeders would be more responsible for what they are putting out there. The health problems these dogs face fall in the laps of the unsuspecting buyer.

Thank you to everyone who replied.
