Male Dog Doesn't Lock Up???
I am a breeder of pembroke corgis and have been for 6 years. I have only had one male which I love to death and have always used him for a stud to my females but he is a "true red" meaning no matter what color the female is, he will only produce red and white corgi pups. I purchased another stud dog a while back to try to get the tri and sable pups at my farm. He is four years old and has been bred once successfully with no problems. I have tried breeding him to three females that I have with no luck. All females have had pups before and would stand for him at their correct time in heat. I contacted the previous breeder and they said he actually locked up with her female in breeding. The problem I am having is that he will try to breed and hump and hump but never locks with the female and has never had a successful breeding since I have owned him. Any suggestions on why this might be? He isn't too big or small and neither are my females so the size isn't the problem. I hava also actually seen him penetrate with still no locking.

The term is "tied" and after penetration it is the female that controls whether they are tied and stay tied, not the male.

Thanks for the response. The same females I have tried to "tie" him with have been bred to my other male before with no problems. This was just something new to me and I didn't know if others had ever heard of that happening before.

Females can be picky with their males. If you have always used the same male that might be the reason for no tie. They could prefer the male you have always used.

Hi TD,
You may have to HOLD the female so they can lock up. I have had to do this before, and it works.
Let me know how it goes.

provided that the dogs have their breed appropriate clearances and are of a compatible pedigree I think your best option is to spend the money for your vet to do an AI if this is a breeding that is very important to you.

Maybe their practicing safe sex???
No just kidding around. I don't know much about breeding. I'm honestly not sure.
Could the male be sore or injured down there and it is painful for him to actually lock up???

I didn't think that a successful breeding depended on a tie in. That is--dogs can and do become pregant without it. Just a thought.
Also, (I'm sure you probably know this) your vet should be able to do a sperm count on your male who isn't performing for you. That may give an indication of what could be going on. But yes, I agree with the above post: call the vet

My Lance is going to father puppies one day. All this talk of locking and tying makes me nervous. Could he get hurt?

O.k. Thanks. I won't be the one involved. His breeder will "do the dirty deed." I'll take the other dogs out to the park and come home to see the smile on his face after everything is done.

I get a kick out of Jack Russells They're like big dogs in little dog's bodies! They're so energetic and spunky. I love when they have them on TV popping all those balloons. They're so quick at it

They are wonderful, fun dogs but, they can be annoying enough to make a Nun cuss!!!

Pregnancy is possible from a mating with no tie. It is called a slip mating. Ejaculation actually takes place during the quick vigorous happy dance just second before the lock/tie. The tie is natures way of insuring the sperm does not exit the female to quickly and is lost. As long as the Happy dance happens pregnancy can be possible. My female is due any day from a slip mating.
