Default signs of labor

Ok so my Boyfriend's Sister's dog is pregnant and should be giving birth in the next week or 2. I recently checked for symptoms online to see if she had any of them. Every site I checked said that if the temperature drops below 100 that's a big sign that labor should happen in the next 24 hours. Well we checked her temperature today and it came up as 98.5, the thing is she isn't showing any of the other signs. So we called the vet and they said they weren't sure about the temperature thing but basically said the same thing as when I did a search.

The only thing weird she has been doing is going outside for long periods of time (there is a doggy door) and sleeping a lot more. No nesting or anything. No loss of appetite. Although she has been kind of moody towards the other dogs in the house...like if they start playing too rough she feels the need to mediate the situation and if another dog gets too close she will growl and kind of snap at them. Oh and a couple of days ago she started whining for no reason, like she was just walking and started whining. My boyfriend's sister says she's been doing that every once in a while.

So we aren't really sure if she is going into labor or not. Should the symptoms happen in a certain time period?

Just like with humans her moody behavior could probably be from being pregnant. Just like with humans I suppose it could change hormones and such.

She may be wimpering because of contractions and other abdominal pain associated with pregnancy.

Pregnancy is dogs usually last about 63 days. Like u said, when temperature drops below 100 degrees this is a sign of labor. From what I have read when a dog's temperature drops below 100 degrees this mean she will deliver within 24 hours in most cases. I'd just make sure to be prepared for her to deliver any time. She could possibly deliver within 24 hours even though she may not be showing other signs. Important thing here is to just be ready, possibly within 24 hours. Be prepared and everything should go fine. Whining is common in stage 1 of labor because of the contractions. You said she's been whining so this may be signs of stage 1 of labor. Sounds like she could very well be giving birth soon, within 24 hours so be ready. If she doesn't give birth within 24 hours with the temperature drop take her to the vet right away. Here's what I found online;

If the mother fails to go into labor within twenty-four hours after her body temperature drops to below 100F you should take the dog to a veterinarian. Do this also if you have calculated that more than 69 days have passed since the dog was bred.

Here's a link that discusses complications associated with labor and describes the various stages of labor so you'll be prepared.

I personally feel she is in fact in labor.

Good luck! I'm sure you must be excited.

When she is ready you will see the labored breathing (heavy panting), the nesting and you can check the teets to see if there is any milk production.
The best way is to mark the calender noting the day of mating and count out 63 days. This would help a great deal.

Sad that someone would throw pups out like that. Good on you for rescuing them. If her temperature is going up and down there could be obvious complications. The dog should be seen by your vet asap for an evaluation.
