Default We lost a pup, now worried more may go down the same path.

My girl produced 6 beautiful girls on Sunday, shes had pups before and was a fantastic mum. She seemed just as fantastic this time also, but this morning a puppy has disappeared. I can only imagine shes eaten it, but I want reassurance that she wouldnt do this just because she was hungry? (I fed her late this morning and shes raw fed)
Ive bred huskies on a number of occasions over the past few years and all been plain sailing. The only experience I have of negative puppy whelping is a foster husky I had not so long ago, she came to us pregnant, and very nervous. She ate all her pups bar one, who we managed to save literally from her jaws. He was badly hurt but survived and is now a thriving 5mth old. We'd never lost a pup otherwise.
Im so so worried that shes going to eat them all, but I cant watch her 24/7. Do you think it was ill, maybe she crushed it, oh I dont know. Please offer some advice.
I feel like this is my fault, I feel so guilty, and dont know what to do, I dont want any more to follow this way.

Yogi's been breeding dogs for decades. I think he might be the best person to answer this question. I wish I had some answers for you, but I don't breed and have never bred and dogs. I hope the rest make it though. Maybe there was something wrong with one of them.

So glad the remainign pups are doing well.

What type of enclosure are they in? Is it an enclosed whelping pen area, or is she in an open area with access to the entire house?

Was there any evidence of excess blood in the pen?
Is there any way she could have taken it off anywhere and left it (i.e. open access to the house)

It is not uncommon as some might think for a mother to ingest a puppy. Most times the mothers know far before we do that something is just not right with a puppy.
It is quite possible that she sensed something was wrong with it and did what is common. All females are different, some will simply push them away and refuse to feed/care for them, others will eat them.

Its one of the sad (and disgusting) things that breeders have to face. (knocking on wood) has not happened to me in all my years of breeding...but do know many who have went through this.
It is also less common in some breeds. Min Pins, for example, are more likely to push them away and refuse care rather than eat them.

There is no way you could have known she would do this. She did not do it in the past, so you were not concerned at the time.
All you can do is watch mom and babies closely and if she shows signs of attempting to injure any more pups, then removing them from her and hand raising them would be your only other option of she continues.

The pups are almost 2 weeks old now and the 5 remaining girls are doing well. She definately ate the pup, I found the evidence later in her poop
Im guessing she knew something we didnt, and did what mother nature intended. I do wish she'd let me decide, but thats animals for you.
Alls good for now, and at 2 weeks old if I see anything untoward I would remove them, theyd be easier to rear now, but I highly doubt it would come to that.

I'm sorry to hear about the lost pup That's so sad, but it does happen, and you're right- maybe she knew something you didn't. I'm glad all the other pups are doing well though. I've never bred before so I can't be much help with advice but I hope they all continue to do well!
