question - please help
Hi everyone! New here. I've looked through this forum a bit but still had some questions of my own and I was hoping that someone out there would be able to help me out.
We have a 5 yr old male Boston Terrier that we'd like to have puppies of -- what is the best way to go about this?? It doesn't seem to be too effective posting on the classifieds on the internet.
Please advise.. any kind of information is truly appreciated!!
Thank you all.

I don't know much about breeding but here are a few questions that I would like to ask.
What is the reason for breeding your dog? Are you planning on showing or doing some sort of dog sport with them?? Have you ever bred before? Does your dog have papers??
I may not know much about breeding but I do know that it is something that takes time and lots and lots and lots of research and you really have to look at it from every angle to be sure that breeding is the right thing for you and your dog.
If you do breed then I suggest that you find an experienced and reputable breeder to be your mentor and to help you with all of this.
I will let those more experienced than me chime in.

I am not against breeding for a specific purpose, but I am against people who want to breed for money or just to have cute puppies or just because the owner wants 1 dog from a littler of 9 puppies and all of the rest end up in shelters. I want you to go to your local shelter and have a look around. 40% of all dogs bred end up in a shelter. 60 percent of dogs that end up in shelters get put to sleep. So when you breed your dogs and you get 8 puppies, 2 will end up in a shelter, at least 1 will be put to sleep. Is breeding a litter worth the death of an innocent life that YOU brought into this world and are therefore responsible for? If you want a dog, either go to the shelter and adopt or buy from a responsible breeder. If you are breeding so a friend can have a puppy, I would say the same thing to them. If you are breeding for money, forget it. There is no money to be made from it. Responsible breeders breed only to better the breed and are doing good just to break even. And if you want to breed to show your children the joy of life, show them a video from youtube and go adopt a puppy from a rescue or shelter. Leave breeding to experienced and responsible breeders.

Unless your dog is an outstanding example of his breed (and you need an objective opinion on that - we all know our own dogs are the best ) please don't do it.
To add to the reasons already given, you have no idea how breeding will affect him. Many dogs, upon discovering what their equipment is for, become obsessed and will do anything to find a bitch in season. When you realise that the scent of a bitch can carry for over a mile there can be a LOT of reasons for your dog to want to escape.
What is it about your dog you want to reproduce? If it is his character, friendly nature, whatever then that is as much to do with you as with his breeding. Buy or rescue a puppy and bring it up the same way and you will have another happy dog with no risk to your dog's health (some bitches can be very agressive) and no worries about the outcome for someone else's bitch.

Please, just go rescue a dog and save it's life---tis the season to do this. Think how much a rescue dog will mean to you---and how much that dog will love you. I know because I just rescued one!

I rescued 3 of my dogs and I got 1 from a breeder. The one that I got from a breeder is not by any means a outstanding specimen of his species. In fact, he is good natured and friendly but dumber than a box of rocks. He has cow hocks and he is low in the pasterns. I would not want to pass these traits onto the offspring so he is getting fixed. The best way to tell if you have an outstanding specimen in your breed is to show your dog. If you dog is of breedable quality, your dog will get a championship. It would seriously be cheaper to get your dog fixed than it would be to have a litter of puppies. I would get the dog fixed and go adopt a puppy from the shelter. This is the time of year when people go and get other people dogs for christmas. When it doesn't work out, the dogs end up in shelters. So if you wait until the end of January or the beginning of February, you'll not have a shortage of dogs to chose from.

Some males that have been bred before will still try to get to a bitch in heat long after they have been fixed. They don't realize that their junk is missing and they frustrated if they can't do anything about it. Most of the dogs that get picked up as strays around here are uncut males. The ones that get claimed by their owners claim that they didn't know their dog could jump/chew through the fence. A male will do just about anything to get to a female in heat.

I have the best answer for you. Get him FIXED.
What titles does he have? Has he been health/Genetic tested/certified? Has he been Temperment Tested/Certified? Are you a member of the Kennel Club? Are you a member of the Breed Club?
Why do you think you have the right to use your dog as a stud?
Seriously, get your dog fixed.
I have 4 beautiful GSD's who are titled in SchH. They have been health/genetic tested/certified. They have been temperment tested/certified. They are perfect examples of the breed. Why have I not used them as studs? Cause they were FIXED at 6 months as per my contract from my ETHICAL breeder.
And I can tell you right now you did not get him from an ethical breeder.
