Default At what age

Can a male sire puppies?

Don't worry, I'm trying to find the answer for someone who has a young bitch in heat and a very excited male pup of 3 months.

Someone told me that a sign of sexual maturity was consistent leg cocking - and then found her immature pup tied with her bitch and a litter was produced! So I would hate this person to find that the bitch was pregnant.

Any thought?

Firstly I myself have little knowledge on these things but I checked the 'net' and found this which has an answer --somewhere in the middle of it all--ignore the rest of the article!--> At what age can a male dog breed? - Sarah's Dogs - Q&A

I also read in another site--that usually about 6 months or when they start doing the consistent leg cocking. Yogi and other breeders will be able to give some 'hands on' experience I am sure.

I would have thought 6 months too but my friend's experience proved otherwise. I don't know how anyone can manage with an entire dog and bitch - must be mad!

I have to admit, I have been called many things in the past but never "mad".
It is possible but very rare for a male to be ready at that age.

I dunno Yogi - someone who can keep as many dogs as you must be mad or some sort of logistical genius LOL! Do they all live indoors? How do you manage with entire males and bitches in season?

I feel more like a zoo keeper....lol
Actually, it is not that difficult. My male Papillon is extremely good about letting me know when a bitch comes into season if I do not notice the obvious. Once I spot this, the bitch is only let out with the other females and kept in another room from the males. If I am breeding, putting the correct male and female together than they are kept indoor and outdoor time together. All live in the house with their own crates and do very well together considering I have Miniature Pinschers, Italian Greyhounds, Papillons and one German Pinscher. I personally credit the 10 cats for much of the control though my late former breeding male Manx was a very dominant tom and literally put each dog in line when they became out of line so to speak.

Rather you than me! Miss my old Golden Retriever some times. She was the best trained and best trainer ever! Even the day before she died she was first to eat her dinner and first into the garden and never had to raise a lip to control the others.

Am I sniffing out a possible boot camp for dogs in your home in the near future? The cats can do all the work, we'll just send our trouble makers out to you & you can bill us when they're done. AHHH to dream! If you don't mind I'll start by sending Wrigley& his high horse.

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

Or you could just ship out the cats from time to time. "Dog training by nature!"
