Question for All Breeders
Hi there,
I know some breeders will inbreed for different reasons but I am not filmilar with why they do it ect
I was wondering though if this happened to 2 of your dogs that were half brother and sister and was an accident and you were not preparing for this litter would you still sell the pups and not tell any potencial buyers about what "could happen" regarding any health problems down the road?
We are in this situation right now and our dog before she was even a year old developed glaucoma and lens luxations which we have been told that her glaucoma is primary (herediatry/inherited)
She has since had to have one eye removed and has very limited visability in the other and it also will eventually need to be removed once the meds stop controlling the pressures.
The breeder never told us and when i found out on my own thru some research she did not deny but would only say it was an accident and she was either going to drown them at birth or sell them and hope for the best.
Just wondering if this is somehting that should have been told to us up front and let us do some research and decide whether we wanted to take any chances of somehting going wrong with our pup?
We love her to death now (she is 2) and will continue to love her as long as we can.
Any breeders ever been in this situation of having an accidental litter and if so what would you tell buyers?

As one who is an AKC breeder, I would divulge such information. It sounds to me like you purchased a pup more from a BYB not a reputable breeder of purebred registered dogs or you would have had a pedigree document that would have shown you that siblings had mated. Inbreeding is generally only used to keep a line intact with regards to standards and appearance. In most cases thought this is no longer done due to increased chances of health issues common to that breed. Linebreeding has proven to be a better alternative to this end when trying to preserve the breed appearance etc. It also has less risks of inherited health issues.
Granted though, my litters are not accidental. I have scheduled litters based on temperament, size and appearance with emphasis on preserving the breeds instincts so I cannot afford to have accidental litters. There are though breeders who when not satisfied with the appearance of a new litter still in fact cull them. Though not discussed, it does still happen which is unfortunate but to sell the pups, no...I would think it best to allow someone the opportunity to have the pup but with the understanding that there is a chance of an inherited health issue that may need to be addressed. Noting that there is no guarantee that the pup will in fact inherit or not.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes we feel we should have been told upfront and not finding out from doing my own research on the parents.
Both parents and the pups are registered and the way i found out was by looking at the breeders website and seeing the dads name winning some championship and then anpther picture showing the mom and it saying following in her brothers footsteps.
I confronted the breeder and she said it was an accident and the 2 dogs got at eachother when she was out (not responsible in my opinion)
She sais she was going to drown them at birth or sell them and hope for the best.
In any case i feel we should have been told and let us decide if we were willing to take the risk before becomming so attached to her.

If the these are AKC registered pups, you can file a grievance with the AKC. In a sense, report the breeder.

You contact the CKC and explain the circumstances. Often they will investigate and if there is anything out of place with this breeder, they will lose their registration rights for future litters. Sort of like filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about a bad sale or improper sales tactics. A breeder knowingly sold a pup with out divulging inadequacies such as you described, the CKC would need this info and should put this in their file for future investigation. Note, like the AKC, the CKC is a registry and does not write the breed standards etc. This is left to the breed clubs. But with that said, they do have the authority to ban a breeder.
