False Pregnancy?
I know there is alot of info out there about false pregnancy, but does anyone know just how common it is?
Of course I am asking because I have a dog that I believe is going through it now. She's 4 years old, and had back-to-back litters on her last two heat cycles, so we are giving her a break and kept her separated from the rest of the pack. No, she does not have a fever, nor does she have any vaginal discharge, but her abdomen is distended in the same way it is with puppies which makes lying down uncomfortable for her. She's suddenly very hormonal and defensive around our other dogs too, a behavior that she only exhibits a few weeks before giving birth. The timing is perfect for a pseudo pregnancy (almost 6 weeks to the day after her last cycle) and I can't feel any puppies on palpation. If I hadn't kept her in the house with me every moment for the full month from the beginning of her estrous cycle, I would swear she was pregnant, even without feeling any pups, but unless the cat bred her or she became pregnant a full month after her cycle started, it just isn't possible, but she looks pregnant and it's driving both of us crazy. She has been eating normally and she has never exhibited signs of a false pregnancy before.
Anyway, I will probably take her to the vet tomorrow, just to see what they say, but I wonder if I should wait a few weeks and see if it resolves on its own. Any thoughts or advice?
