preparing to breed
As the owner of a happy & healthy cross-breed, and never having had anything to do with Staffordshire Bull Terriers, could somebody please tell me if an aquaintance is as dumb as I think he is?
He is using his Staffordshire Bull Terrier as a stud dog and says he has to take it out running and get it to pull on ropes and jump up to get things he holds in the air for it. His reasoning for this is to increase the dog's stamina ready for breeding.
Please reply with your thoughts and facts on this!

He needs to get his dog fixed. At least 3-4 pitt or staffy mixes get put to sleep in a week at our local pound. I can't imagine what it that number would be for a larger city. Just be humane and get the doggie fixed.

Yes, I feel you are 100% right. Never have I heard of anyone having to get their dog "ready" for breeding.

I fully agree, and have stated my opinion. I have been to my town and the local city to visit rehoming kennels. I have told this man that those kennels are full to bursting with Staffy's and Staffy x dogs. All of them need good homes and not be passed around when they can't be bothered with them any more. There is no more room for unwanted dogs of this breed!
The dog in question is 4 years old and in his 3rd home. It upsets me to see the way these dogs become attached to their owner, who then passes them on to somebody else and without a care. I love my dog (GSD x Border Collie) and could never give him away. In the year I have had him we have built a great relationship and I can't imagine being without him.
I think the Staffy in question needs fixing - and the owner too, to get him out of the gene pool!

Staffies are the most misunderstood breed. The pounds and rescues are overflowing with them - they just can not find homes. Your friend is totally irresponsible and foolish. Sadly people like him do not care about their pets, only what they can get from them.

There are 3 dogs in this pic, although it is hard to see the third one. Today is their last day. If someone doesn't adopt them, they will be euthanized. I am not sure of how they euthanize these dogs. A lot of shelters still use gas chambers instead of lethal injection, which is a really cruel way to die. Tell your friend that he's an idiot if he thinks that most his the dogs he breeds won't end up the same way. This picture is sooo sad. It looks like they are praying. I hope someone can pull them before they get euthanized. Log In | Facebook

As I said in my last post, I agree that it is wrong to breed more Staffy's when there are so many unwanted ones in animal shelters. The person in question isn't a friend, more of an aquaintance - I wouldn't remain friends with somebody so heartless for very long!
I can't actually see the picture you have posted, but I don't think any photo will stop him as I have strongly stated what i saw in local animal shelters and that it is inhumane to breed more.

I don't think anyone is thinking you are in any way agreeing with him. I wish I could remember the statistics my vet gave me about Staffies. It really is awful that they have become victims of fashion and politics.

My neighbour has recently taken on an unwanted Staffy dog. Not my choice of dog, because I like longer haired cross breeds, but this Staffy is a lovely dog. He was brought up with small children as a family dog, and he is very friendly towards other dogs. He loves lots of attention and has boundless energy for playing.
The fashion to have an aggressive dog saddens me, and very much because certain breeds are given such bad press as they have been chosen by stupid people to be their fashion accessory.
I could stand on my soapbox and berate these people all day, as I am sure most of the people on this site could, but I'm afraid it too often falls on deaf ears.

I think everyone here is in agreement that breeding should only be carried out in exceptional circumstances by experienced owners if it is going to enhance the breed and should never be contemplated as a way of making money. But even so the stupidity we see around us on a daily basis means we have to let off steam somewhere and a forum like this is as good a place as any LOL!
It seems in my corner of the UK that Staffies are falling out of popularity with the local "hard" men - they all seem to have husky or malamute types. And they struggle to control them leading to some very scary confrontations.

I tried to post the actual pic, but since w4e can't post pics because the server is broke I tried to link it and that's not working either. I saved the pic to post at a later date when it gets fixed. Hopefully the dogs found homes today. If not, they get put to sleep tomorrow morning. Suggestion: pick your acquaintance up and take him to the shelter on a day when they are putting dogs to sleep. Don't tell him where you are going until you get inside the facility. Have him watch these dogs and puppies being put to sleep.
