witness to a breeding.....
Hi, I have dogs of my own but was recently at a good friends home while a breeding was taking place with their Rottweilers, Anyway, the male did his job and the two were tied together, but when they released each other (sorry about the terminology) a whole load of clear fluid went everywhere. I didn't want to ask as to be honest I felt a little silly asking but is this normal? I am really interested as I am on the list to own one of the pups as a companion for my girl and these guys are health checked to the hilt (one thing I didn't do with my girl and I just can't wait to find out so my question is, as all of the fluid seemed to come out (I'm not doing very well at this lol) can the bitch still be pregnant? I didn't hear anyone talk about another mating...
Sorry about my ignorance, and I look forward to any replies. Thanks.

Did you ask your friend? If your friend was a reputable breeder and you are getting a pup from him/her, then your friend will be willing to answer any question you ask about the breeding. Maybe the dog peed afterwards.

As my family and I have been reputable German Rottweiler breeders here in the U.S. and in Europe as well for over 30 years, I can speak from experience that a large quantity of ejaculatory fluid spilling after release is a usually a sign that the breeding wasn't done properly and didn't last a sufficient amount of time. I say usually because a very large quantity of fluid spill usually occurs when the two dogs prematurely release. But, in rare cases a significant quantity can spill even though the breeding was done correctly and lasted sufficiently. But, as I said this is rather rare. With every breeding, there is fluid leakage, but the amount is considerably small.
Now, this is not to say that the female won't have a chance of becoming pregnant. I'm not sure if you had a chance to see the spilled fluid, but you most likely would have seen a clear-like fluid. This suggests that the fluid has a rather small semen count, as high semen count fluid is creamy in color. Meaning that the high semen count most likely stayed inside the female.
To wrap up, with every breeding there will always be some degree of fluid leakage, but this degree is rather small and in the form of drops, and that is why you may have noticed that the male will instinctually go to vulva immediately after finishing to lick it, as this contracts the vulva stops the female from dripping any fluid. But a significantly large amount is usually a sign of improper breeding by inexperienced breeders.
Hope that helped

it's not the fluid that is responsible for conception - it's what's in it.
as long as the sperm gets to where it needs to go, the fluid doesn't matter.
look at the mess humans produce and yet conception still happens!

To a degree you are correct, and that is why I mentioned that the fluid that was most likely spilled is clear-like in nature and thus low in semen count.
Now, that is not to say that you can totally dismiss the fluids completely in the reproductive process.
Canine semen has three fractions. All three of these serve a purpose, although they vary in semen count. The clear-fluids aid in nurturing the semen in the travelling process as canine semen can stay fertile inside the female, not having reached the ovaries, for up to three days on their journey. This means, the large amount of fluid that was spilled after release, will not help nurture the dormant semen inside the female and will most likely result in the female not becoming pregnant, or having a low litter count.

sounds exactly the same as humans - humans, too, have various consistencies of ejaculate, all with differing sperm counts and purposes. sperm can remain active for up to five days in humans.
perhaps a rapid release of a lot of fluid could indicate the positioning was less than ideal, resulting in deposition too low in the birth canal?

And this is why when you go have your female artificially inseminated, after inserting the semen, veterinarians use a significant amount of what they call semen extender, which is a clear fluid that aids the semen on their journey.

You are correct, and the release of a large amount of fluid can be indicative of various factors. But as I stated, it usually occurs when the breeding prematurely ends.
