I generally don't breed after a bitch has reached 5 years. However if you would like to breed do it on her next heat cycle. DO NOT breeder her after she reaches 7 years. There are somethings you will want to do before her next heat to make sure she's okay to breed. Make a visit to the vet to make sure she is in good health. Explain to your vet that you would like to breed her once on her next heat and see what they say. Every dog is different so you want to make sure that your dog is in good physical form before she is bred. Also if you dog isn't already you want to make sure that she's on a premium dog food. It will cost more, but it will give the pups the best possible chance.

When it comes time to breed her during her heat cycle you want to cout about 10days form the first day she bleeds. Normally what I do is around day 7 from when I notice she's in heat I indtroduce the male to her. She will not let him mate with her until she's ready anyway. Let them stay together (only when you are in the room with them) until the mate for the first time. At that point (it will probly be around day 10) you want to keep them separate for 24 hrs, let them breed and wait 48 hrs. You can breed them a forth time, but it's not really nessisary. DO NOT let more than 5 days lapse from the date of the first breeding to the date of the last breeding (otherwise you may get pups that are concived upto a week apart and they might get born too early). Make sure you note all the breeding dates as this will tell you when to expect the litter (usually 62 days from the first breeding).

I hope that helps. Feel free to post or email anymore questions you may have and good luck

Thank you that is brilliant advice atleast I know what to do and how to move on from here.

I shall definetly do as you say get her checked by a Vet as I dont want to breed her if its going to endanger her life.

Yeah I see what you mean, Because she's 6 thats why I asked.

And please dont tell me what I do & dont know as to be honest Im getting a bit sick of hearing it.

I know there is plenty of staffi dogs in shelters, We did look for a puppy for ages but most of them were mixed breed and we do not want a mixed breed.

And yes she has papers but we dont have them but we have seen them.

I get what you saying honestly I do this is why I thought id ask her instead of just going on ahead and doing it, as this would be stupid and I thought there was many factors which need to be considered.

You have pointed these factors out which is what I exactly wnated which im Grateful for.

It does sounds like a lot of trouble for a person who isnt a experienced breeder & I wouldnt want to put my dog at any harm as I love her dearly.

So I think i'll leave the breeding to experienced people.

And I am in the UK, and its unlikely that I will be able to get a dog through a shelter as we live in a maisonette and thats a No for a start, even with 2 parks like 10 metres away.

Looks like i'll just have to try & find one which has been breed & is being sold privately allthough I would rather rescue one as you've said theresis plenty in shelters.

Ok I accept your apolgie. I know what you mean though plenty of dogs with no homes yet they are stil being breed I do get this point & to some like you this can be heart breaking, if only we could take all the dogs home!

Ok so say I looked around for a breeder and lets say I found one, How would I know that he is a responsible good breeder? As I wouldnt want to support him/she by buying a pup off them if they are bad breeders.

So tips on what to look for in a breeder to see if there are a 'good' breeder or not.

Having a dog and being a breeder are too different things.
If you don't know anything about breeding don't do it.
Dogs should be more then just registered purebreds before being bred.
They should be shown to prove they are worthy of being bred.Plus every breed has health problems.
Do you have American Staffordshire Terrier or Staffordshire Terrier?
Staffy Bulls are being tested for hip, elbows, eyes, heart, patella, and some even bear hearing test.
Am.Staffs are being tested for pretty much the same things with the Thyriod being also tested.
I you just at least tested and certified the hips it would be a start.
Some people are OFA'ing the dogs hips and some are penn hiping the dogs.
This is the OFA site. This shows the certifications http://www.offa.org/samplecerts.html#hiprpt
You might say well I'm only breeding pets .Everyone who buys a dog deserves to know that it is a healthy puppy inside and out.
One should only be breeding to improve the breed not just have puppies.

It really does feel like everyone is getting at me on this subject! I only started this thread because I wanted to know about breeding not specifically because I wanted to breed her. I was interested in the subject!

I have a Staffordshire Terrier, and dalshep thanks for the links I shall start my search for a puppy from a decent breeder. I would still rather rescue one but I surpose I can try that when I have my own place. I dont even mind taking on a one or two year old. I dont want a puppy just because its a puppy I wanted a puppy so I can bring it up as I never got the chance to bring my dog up from a puppy.

Thanks though!
