Default Boarding kennels

Has anyone here ever put their dog in a boarding kennel while they have gone on holiday?
My boss put her two puppies into one a few months ago and they were really ill for two weeks after they came back.A lot of vet bills later and they have recovered.

I always think it's wise to go to a kennels on a personal recommendation, preferably from a few people.
Then again, I think possibly putting puppies in a kennel is a way of asking for trouble.
Alterations to their diet and the stress implications would open them up to a lot of problems. I certainly wouldn't kennel pups unless I absolutely had to.

I've had my dog at a boarding kennel. Unfortunately when I picked him up he had ticks. I took him back and they gave him a complimentary tick dip.

It's amazing really how they actually would give him back to you with ticks in the first place.
Don't these places check the dogs over on a regular basis whilst the dogs are in their care?

Ooh, I'd have been hopping mad.

Believe me, I was angry as well. That's exactly how he received an immediate tick bath. And they'd better not ask me to pay for it either.

I have never kenneled my dog, but I have went and visited kennels when my mom was looking for one for her poodles, and I can tell you what we looked at 6 and I did'nt like any of them, my mom did but shes not as protective over her dogs as I am mine. I would'nt have left my pup in not one of them. The poor dogs are in small cages and let out only twice a day. The cages are concrete floors and side by side, my poor pup would go nuts. But sometimes people have no choice but to kennel, so I would just visit alot in your area, ask TONS of questions get things in writting and everything should be fine.

I asked the vet's office for recommendations for kennels; turns out they have kennels! I tell Phoebe she is going to camp when she has to stay there, she likes it a lot and has never come home sick.

sometimes I just hire a dog walker, though, to come in a few times a day if I'm only going to be gone a little while (weekend or something).

oh lord if i tried leaving our dogs alone for more than 2 hours at a time they would freak out... you are so lucky your dog is ok with that LOl I work from home, so they are ALWAYS around atleast one person, sometimes they whine when "daddy" leaves to run errand and I always say 'what am i chopped liver?!" lol I'm sure if I tried doing the dogwalker thing, I'd come home and there would be a pile of rubble where my couch use to be LOL
We plan all our trips to allow us to take our dogs with us.
