Exactly! I'm aware that some of the things that we eat may not be all that good for our pets, but it’s so hard to say no to them when they start looking at us with their patented puppy-dog eyes while we’re munching on that perfectly cooked slice of bacon.

I gave my dogs some human food but not always and rather not. I normally don’t want to make any mistakes on giving them food that could make them sick. Normally I buy some dog biscuits from one of the near pet stores as their treats.

Very rarely do I feed them while I'm eating. . .sometimes (but not too often) I take a certain amount of kibble away and put something healthy for replacement. This way they get occasional "people food" and don't get encouraged to beg all the time. I am more cautious about it now, though, I want healthy, long-lived dogs without being overweight!

People food is severly restricted at my house. And NOTHING with tomatoes in it. They have to wait until people are all finished eating though.

I do make them special dinners though. Brown rice cooked in broth, plain unsweetened yogurt, ground turkey or hamburger, shredded squash and carrots, and mix with a handful of kibble.

I heard that you should only feed your dog, dog food and that natural dog food is best. So, does it hurt to give your dog leftover scraps after you eat?

My dogs love crackers, so if I'm eating some, I'll generally give them one or two.

And I save them the last scraps of the meat we're having for dinner as a treat.

Back when wolves hung out at men's campsites, they ate the leftover scraps and they survived. LOL Before dog food ever became a business, dogs have been eating man's leftovers. It's not if it is bad for them or not, (though some things are - like onions and chocolate) it's the bad habits it encourages like begging. That's why it is best to disassociate your meal from them getting scraps. Take it into the kitchen, collect all the scraps and set them aside for a few minutes. Later, give them the scraps.

There is something that I do because of being single and having 6 dogs - there are usually not enough scraps to go around to everyone. So I sometimes put them in a plastic bowl and put them in the refrigerator until the weekend. Then I boil some bones to make broth and dump all the leftovers from the week in it, any leftover bacon grease I have, and add some brown rice and, if needed, some ground meat and cook it until the rice is done. Let it cool off before feeding. They love it.

There is also a program out there that teaches the elderly how to fix food for themselves and their pets that is healthy and nutritious for both. Older people will often not cook for themselves, but they will cook for their pets. This program shows them how they can do both so that they eat healthy. Saw that on Animal Planet.

Sometimes I let my pet eat steaks and pizza as a treat. I could never say no to her especially if she's giving you the eyes. I'm carefull with this since some of our food may cause allergic reactions.
