Default Ever heard of giving your dog garlic to keep fleas away?

Once one of my friends told me that she gave her dog garlic pills to help keep fleas off of him. I have thought about giving this a try has anyone ever heard of this before. My friend was a huge herbal freak she worked at a herbal store and took all kinds of herbal stuff herself she she gave her dog more than just garlic but I can't remember what all she gave him this has been gosh about 10 or 11 years ago.

I have done that before. My aunt gives her dog garlic all the time. Basically, it just repels the fleas from your dog because fleas don't like garlic. It doesn't kill them though. If you want them out of your house, you still have to treat your house. I gave my dogs garlic/brewers yeast tablets that can be found at WalMart or Giant Eagle.

I think that I have brewers yeast so does that help with the fleas also? and how many garlic pill and brewers yeast pills would you give to your dog each day?

I think the brewers yeast helps more with the coat than anything. How much you give your dog depends on weight. I think I gave my dogs 2/day. They weigh around 50lbs. Hope this helps

My dog only weights about maybe 25lbs so I would say only 1 a day for her then.

Why not just put frontline or advantage on the dogs, that way it kills the fleas. I would'nt want the fleas hitching a ride on my pup and infesting my home, thats what will happen, they won't like the dog but they will definatly like your carpet, bedding and furniture, and hey humans are a pretty good blood snack! I just don't understand herbel stuff for pets or humans for that matter! LOL

I would like to learn more about this also! I have known of a couple people who say they give their dogs a garlic pill a day to keep the fleas away, anyone have any experience with that? I'm not too sure about dog health ... Isn't there a couple sites out there that list garlic as one of the things that are toxic to dogs? It's hard enough to be so picky about the dog food I buy for my baby and table scraps he tends to get..
Sometimes things like K9 Advantage and Frontline are a little hard to come up with, as they're so expensive!

I can see that as one reason people want to look into alternative methods.

I have tried all kinds of Home Remedies, and even store bought medications to slow down the bites from flies, and none seemed to work. I called the vet about this problem, as the ears on my poor dog were all eaten up. She suggested putting on some "Vaseline", and it would stop them from biting. Guess what, it actually worked, and made his ears nice and smooth......

I'd never heard of this before. I'm not sure I would try it though, my dogs don't like pills, it's hard enough to get the adult to eat his heartworm medicine. It's supposed to be flavored and we make it seem like a treat, but he usually only eats about half of it, then drops it and runs off.

I'm gonna have to try the Vaseline trick though, our puppy had fleas so bad that the constant scratching makes it look like he has mange on his shoulders. Which he doesn't, we took him to the vet & the vet told us it was because of the scratching and we would just have to keep the fleas off him, which is hard to do in Oklahoma, and let the hair grow in on its own.

I've never heard of that before. Usually I just use Frontline to keep the fleas and ticks away.

Well I am glad to know I am not the only one concerned about garlic being listed as something that's toxic to the dog..

Vaseline, the thought of rubbing it into my dog's fur scares me. You just apply it to their ears, and how? Only on the outside, underneath? Sorry.. This is all new to me. lol

spike, why does the though of putting Vaseline in your dog's fur scare you? As for applying it to the ears or anywhere else, I think you would rub it on the affected skin.

Well I think I understand what was said here about using Vaseline only on severely affected areas now. Didn't occur to me that you don't run it all over them to completely control a flea problem. Thank you very much for clarifying that for me.

My dog doesn't have any areas that would apply to, except maybe right under where his dog collar is..

I have never heard of this before. I always take my dogs to the vet and get Frontline. It is quite expensive and I am going to give some of these other methods a try.

Garlic is definately NOT toxic to dogs. I give it to mine all the time. My aunt has given her dogs garlic for years & there has never been any problems. I don't know if maybe some dogs are allergic to it, but it's not toxic to most dogs.

Well some people would prefer to avoid chemicals and medications like Frontline for their dogs, that's why the look for alternative methods.

I myself have my dog on a raw diet. When we first bought him, he had relatively normal puppy energy but the shedding was UNBELIEVABLE! I am guessing it was the Aussie Shepard in him but I mean...piles and clumps and loads of hair dropping off this dog! Didn't help that I have a dog allergy to some types of hair, or just large amounts of any kind of hair so i was having troubles!

He gets chicken, beef and sometimes pork and fish. He also gets eggs, brewers yeast ( sprinkled on his food, he LOVES it) and either just raw garlic, or garlic powder. We have never had a problem with fleas so far, and he spends a good amount of time outdoors and with other pups around the neighborhood.
He also gets a dog multivitamin once a day. It helps ALOT and the shedding? Has almost completely stopped! Hallelujah!

Oh also..I got the brewers yeast idea from growing up. We had a dog, she was a spaniel/chow chow mix. She had long thick fur as well. My mother always put brwers yeast in her food, and while living 5 years in New Hampshire & 5 years in Florida, I can think of only once when we had flea problems, so that is pretty good! I think the yeast must have something to do with it, she always said that is why we gave it to her. Seems like it worked to me.

LuvMyMutt

P.S) Brewers yeast also tastes great on popcorn for humans
