Default Question about Dachshund dogs.

Hey everyone. We have a 1 year old mini dachshund. For those who are not familiar with that, its a weiner dog.

When we got her, we noticed she had a weird smell from her butt area. It came and went. We questioned the vet about it, and they said when dachshunds get scared, they have a small sac that lets off a really sour aroma from their behind area. The vet said you can stop it by once and a while squeezing gently in that area with a paper towel there to catch the stuff that came out.

He did it and this god awful stuff came out. Quite a bit too.
SInce then the smell has kinda come back, and we can figure out how the vet did it.
Does anyone know how this proceedure is done?

Her anal glands are impacted.

These glands were very helpful to dogs in the wild. The secretions helped them pass particularly difficult stools.

These days they are of very little use and quite a lot of dogs need them emptying on a regular basis.

Go back to your vet and he may, but then again may not, teach you how to do it yourself.

Don't leave them unattended because they can become infected and also the dog will try and wipe them on your floor to relieve it. You just end up with a stinky carpet that way.
