He might just have the hiccups. I've heard my dogs making noises like this when they drink or eat to fast. They might just have to cough up a little water.

My Shepherd Pup gets them all the time (and hard too!) and this is what I came up with when I searched the issue:

Hiccups -— Hiccoughs & More Hic-cups
Race Foster, DVM
Marty Smith, DVM
Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.

Puppies quite commonly get hiccups. When puppies eat and drink, they tend to ingest large quantities of air. Air, as it enters the esophagus and stomach, tends to trigger the hiccupping response. The authors have never seen an instance where hiccups was the result of any disease disorder. Consider hiccupping normal and common in dogs, and especially in puppies less than eight months of age.

There is really nothing you can do for a puppy with hiccups, other than have him rest quietly until the hiccups are gone. If you find certain circumstances such as extreme excitement seem to trigger the hiccups, you can try to avoid those types of situations.

I hope this helps ease your mind...

Well, if the hiccups are totally normal and just caused by swollowing lots of air while drinking and eating it might help if your pup didn't eat so fast. If your pup eats fast and you think that might be the cause then to slow down his eating it helps if you put something, like a large stone(not small enough to eat), in the middle of the bowl. This will slow him down because dogs usually don't like there noses being bumped and he will try and avoid the rock.

This is perfectly normal...And most common in larger breed dogs...Esp after eating and drinking.....Air goes down with the food and water...all my pups have gotten the hick ups...Every last one....Feeding and watering them elivated helps....

No worries, your dog is doing nothing abnormal

Default Hiccups

Gus used to get them all the time when he was a pup. He can still get them on occasion, but its rare.

Don't worry about it, its just part of your puppy's development. It's because your puppy is developing similarly to babies who also hiccup quite a bit.
