Default Dog Walks?

on the show the dog whisperer cesar always rambles on about the person walking in front. but my dogs don't really walk, but run. so they are always in front of me. when they slow down they are sniffing around. but cesar doesn't allow the dogs to do that on his show. what do you guys think and allow your dog to do on dog walks? what about skating. i would love to try that with my dogs since they love to pull/run, but what about stopping? how can i stop the dogs when i'm skating?

I allow my dogs to lead when I am walking. As you said, they like to sniff around and everything like that. I don't see what is wrong with it, unless they are pulling/dragging you around everywhere. My dogs are well behaved on the leash whether they are leading or by my side, so I allow them to walk however they want.

I want walks to be enjoyable for my dogs so I am not very strict on where they walk and I allow them to sniff. For most walks they are on retractable leashes or off-leash anyway. Natalie knows how to "heel" but its not something I make her do all the time. I do shorter separate walks to maintain that.

Basically, as long as a dog is friendly and not dragging me down the street I don't care where they walk.

I think it would be a lot worse to drag your dog along behind you. You'd practically have to run to stay ahead of your dog, and besides, it's their walk, let them have fun.

I agree with you on this one.

I walk my dog so he could have some fun. It's his walk not mine. Actually, like Pupcake said, my dog runs and not walks. He likes it so much. He gets very excited. I allow him to sniff things but I will not allow him to lick anything. Haha.

My dog Bo will heel for daddy, but didn't you know they'res a different set of rules for walking with mummy. I find it difficult and not enjoyable to walk him as I am being dragged own the street, all 65 lbs of him.

Yeah, maybe it's different if you have a big dog. Mine is just a medium...or maybe even considered a small sized dog. He's just about 15 or16 pounds so it's okay if he drags me around. It’s still quite enjoyable.

I just let my dog walks/run around the lawn or in parks. I couldn't let her drag me around since I'm walking to slow. I walked my dog usually early in the morning so that she can smell the fresh scent of the day.

try loose leash training, you are the leader not the dog.
