Hmmm...I've never heard of that before. I'll look it up & if I find any info for you, I'll post it.

I have struggled with the same problem with my dog, I tried something new. It works in humans, so why not dogs? The easy recipe is HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. I had a syringe that I had before when I had to feed the dog some pain medicine, it's a little plunger with a small hole. Fill it up with "hp" make sure your dog is lying down comfortably on the side opposite of the infected ear. The first time you may want some help, as the dog will struggle when you first pour the liquid in. At first , it bubbles in their ear canal, which they don't know it's just medicine. The bubbling is killing the infection. You have to fill the ear canal, hold a towel over the ear, and pet or rub your dog somewhere else on the body to distract him from the ear. After 1 minute, let the dog drain his ear, either by shaking or turn him over to let it drain on a towel. Then repeat. You will know it is working, because the smell and gunk of the ear infection comes out. If the infection is bad, repeat twice. You may have to do this every 2- 3 days until clean. Then keep weekly or bi-weekly maintenance on the ear using the same procedure. I did this with my dog, and now his ear is healthy. It used to be stinky, red, raw, he was scratching, and I would go through lot's of swabs that were black before it was clean. Now, I only have to use a couple to keep it clean. His ear is now healthy, no longer red, and no smell. You will be able to tell when to use the "hp" if needed.

yeast infections are very common in GSD's.

here are two other very good things to fight ear infections.

Zymox Otic ®

Blue Ear Wash - Poodles - Ear problems - Blue Power - Recipe
this one is called "blue power ear treatment" also "blue powder ear treatment"
it can also be used for yeast or fungus infections anywhere on the skin or feet.

if you are feeding a cheap food look & see if brewers dried yeast is in there. tell me exactly what you are feeding & we can fix that too

boric acid powder is also good to use to keep the ears dry after you have cleaned them. sounds like your vet is primarily interested in his wallet.

Wow, do I have a story for you... My Collie used to get ear infections in his left ear. I posted a few months ago about rinsing with Peroxide, which seems to work. Well, what works even better, if you just clean his ear with normal doggie ear cleaner, using Q-tips gently, then sprinkle athletes food powder in his ear. I have been using Desenex, and it works fantastic, no more ear infections, and his ear has never looked better.. No more redness or irritation or build up of brown yucky stuff. Hope this helps.

I just joined today, but I have a cocker spaniel who is always fighting ear infections. I am going to try the peroxide and the desenex treatments. Thank you so much.

Please don't put peroxide in your dog's ears. It can cause serious ulcerations and tissue erosions deep in the ear canal, because you cannot completely remove it. It just sits down there and burns. An acidifying ear wash, like apple cider vinegar, is a much better choice. Wipe the ear with cotton balls saturated with vinegar. Yeast cannot grow well in an acidic environment, and your goal should be to keep the ear dry and acidic.

The first step in treating ear infections is to identify what's causing them. 95% of the time it's allergies. Food allergies and inhaled (pollen, dust mites) allergies being the most frequent. Treat the allergies and the ear infections clear up. If you don't treat the allergies, the ear infections will just keep returning.
