Default "Scooting"

Does anyone have problems with their dog "scooting" across the floor?

I believe that signifies a problem that should be handled by the vet... ? :???:

You don't necessarily need to go to the vet. It's usually because the oil from the anal sacs isn't coming out. Try rubbing just under the tail on either side. If that doesn't work, then take it to the vet. But that worked for my dog when she was a pup.

When my dog was doing this, I took her to the vet (this was years ago, before we got the two we have now) and turns out she had worms. It wasn't a big deal to treat, and I was glad that it was something so simple.

It depends. I had a dog who used to do this just for fun or to clean herself (Great). It usually does hint that they have worms though.

I have heard both, to clean themselves and maybe because of worms. A call to the vet wouldn't hurt.

Took my JRT to the vet because of Scooting, and thought Maybe worms, but it was just clogged anal glands. Cost me 160. just to learn how to express them. Now I know, and I will do the expressing first, before bringing another dog to the vet for scooting.
BTW it sure does stink to express them!

It would be nice if you would share your 160.00 dollar secret of expressing the dogs glands.

Is it a dog massage like what the other poster mentioned or does it require and special medications to help the dog along?

Sorry my browser wouldn't let me on the site until tonight. Do not try this without a vet watching for the first time. You could tear or puncture the gland and then you are really literally in a world of sh##.
Wear vinal (sp) gloves. Have a lubricant, neosporin is fine. Put lube on first finger, and slip into anal area. feel around usually on each side but sometimes alittle up or down, and when you feel something like a blister, start from inwards, and press evenly and try to make it come out. Do not try more than twice. You can always try the next day. Women with long nails do not do this! A scratched anal cavity can and does cause the scooting problem.

There is a third reason for scooting.

Allergies, they can often be mistaken for impacted anal sacs, the most common of the allergens are fleas, so check and treat if necessary.
Have you changed foods recently? Perhaps your dog is allergic to an ingredient.

Impacted Anal Sacs are obviously a problem and should be taken to the vet if it occurs for the first time, many dog owners express them theirselves but this can be risky. If not properly emptied the sacs can become infected and if done incorrectly can cause rupture = pain for poochy . (So it would cost less to have your vet do it...just in case!!)

Tapeworm is also a possibility, check faeces and the fur around the anus for white segments that look like grains of rice and treat if necessary.
