Default Buddys skin and coat

Buddy has very dry skin and is shedding that as well as his coat. Could it be the food? He is currently eating Iams reduced fat for older dogs (he is 5 and 1/2 years old) because of his weight. I would apprecaite any input and suggestions.

It could very well be what he is eating. If you have seen the Vet, and still nothing, I would try changing the food.

I recently talked to my vet about my puppies dry skin. He suggested a little grease (bacon, hamburger, etc.) on his dog food. He said that dog food is made with very little oil now. My puppy is only 15 weeks old and is a chocolate lab that had alot of dandruff because of being dry. You might discuss it with your vet since your dog is older. I hope this helps.

I have checked his skin with the vet and his blood test are all fine. For the record he is a Golden Retriever. He came to us at 2 years old with a skin condition and since then I have tried the Vet Eukunuba with less fat. I might just go back to that as his skin was not as bad. It appears scaley as that is how it was 3 years ago, but now his skin has most definitley gotten dry.

Thanks for your help. When we first got him we tried several shampoos that the vet recommended for his skin but nothing really worked. We also tried Old Mother Hubbard food and he did not do very well on that either. I will check out some premium dog foods on line and see what I can find.

By the way I am looking for a good groomer for him. MY first Golden had a groomer who groomed for show dogs and she spolied me. Now I have Buddy and I am searching for a groomer who knows how to cut Goldens. Where do you work, Long Island area??

I give my lab Sardines w/ soy bean oil twice a week and it's really helped his dry coat!
