According to what I was taught in catholic school, all living creatures have souls. They are just different depending on the kind of creature.
Plants have a kind of soul that allows them to eat, reproduce, and just be alive.
Dogs and other animals have the kind of soul that allows them to have sensation and feel, while humans have a soul that allows us to think and to reason.

I must say that I have very good reason to believe my Dogs are perfectly able to think and to Reason as well!!! Often times much more objectively than I. They can judge situations without emotion and they NEVER forget a thing!!!

I dare say plants have the ability to think and to reason, too!! They use it to adopt to the climatic disaster we (reasoning) human idiots are causing to the planet. If you search the news a bit you'll find evidence of this in the plant life changes of California!

If you read my post, it was in no way negative only responding as anyone would with regards to the OP. This pertains to dogs and is a common question. Those of us believe like humans which whether you like it or not are also a species of animal do possess emotions. Just because we do not understand their language in no implies they cannot speak this also holds true for their thought process. It was you with your implied religious overtones that clearly whether you realize it or not gave pretty much all of us here the impression you are preaching to us thus talking down to us. I personally will not accept this and was be quite kind in only asking that religion be avoided with regards to the posts. You are the one who made this more than it needed to be. Well call me confused. How does one not be religious when discussing whether animals do or do not have a soul? Isn't that a religious concept?

If I am allowed, I respectfully point out to those of the Christian faith that the Bible does mention that there are animals in Heaven. How else could the lion lay down with the lamb? What pulled that fiery chariot down from Heaven if they weren't horses?
