Is it true about dogs and Chocolate?
I have always herd that you can't give dogs chocolate because their systems can't digest it. Is this true or false? If someone could show me some evidence one way or the other it would be appreciated.

It is true. The lactose in milk chocolate can kill both cats and dogs. You can always go to your local pet store though and buy choc drops for your pet though. The chocolate is modified for them.

I had a basset mix who ate between 10-12 oz. of Dove chocolate (foil and all). At this point in time she was lethargic and whiney and we knew by the look on her face that something was seriously wrong. We got her to the vet within 3-4 hours after she had most likely eaten the chocolate and they had to pump her stomach. The vet said she would have died had we not acted so quickly. I've also heard that raisins are toxic to dogs but I'm not sure if its true or not.

You can give your dog chocolate. But it will kill them. Not a good thing to do if you need someone to admire you, and is always faithful to you.

NO, it;s actually because cacaotine( like caffeine but in chocolate) affects their nervous system giving them propension to seizures, lactose will give them severe diarrhea and sugar can make them "addicted" to sweets and they will jump on them at the very first chance, hence lowering their defenses and giving them higher chances to get canine diabete, that's some of the main reasons that make chocolate bad for a dog!

It does mess with their metabolism. A lot of chocolae to a small dog might kill it. A little chocolate to a big dog might be fine, or just give it diarrhea.

Um I'm not sure what's up with this. My miniature dachshund can eat tons of chocolate, like a whole hershy bar at a time, and she has no problems. I think it depends on the dog and the breed. Chocolate can't be healthy for dogs, so it's better off away from them.

I always let my dog, Mister, have chocolate and other candy when i was growing up. It never hurt him at all. But then again he was a very tough dog. He was hit by 4 different cars and was 'dog-napped' twice, had looots of fights with other male dogs, and is still alive at 14 years old. which isnt that great but not bad either. Hes an english mastiff/ C. cur mix. so i guess its true with other dogs, but.. for me, my Mister is an exception... ill just say that i wont try it with another dog, though...
(i was wondering the same thing about a week ago.. lol)

I know people say it's deadly but, my parents in law have a black lab that has eaten so much chocolate (he's sneaky) he should be dead by now! He even ate one of those huge chocolate Easter Bunnies...he just gets the poops...

It is not anything to do withthe milk it is all to do with the chemical in chocolate called theobromine.Theobromine is similar to caffeine. Theobromine is toxic to a dog when it ingests between 100 and 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. That is why some people do not find a problem in small amounts.Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine: It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only 2 ounces of baker's chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate. It is not that hard for a dog to get into something like an Easter basket full of chocolate eggs and bunnies and gobble up a pound or two of chocolate. If the dog is small, that could be deadly. It turns out that chocolate poisoning is actually not as unusual as it sounds. For a human being, caffeine is toxic at levels of 150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. That's the same as for dogs! Humans generally weigh a lot more than dogs, but small children can get into trouble with caffeine or chocolate if they consume too much of it. Infants are especially vulnerable because they don't eliminate caffeine from the bloodstream nearly as quickly as adults.

i watched a special on animal planet once that said every ten lb of dog it will take 5 lb of chocalot to kill it. so if your dog is 20 lb no more than 10 lb of choclate. so if i applyed that rule to myself 55 lb of cholalot would kill me. thats alot of chocalotyeah makes sence. as for them acuring a taste for it, i don't know about you but my dog has a taste for just about anything weithr he knows it or not.

It is true that real chocolate will kill a dog, but my lab/German Shepard has eaten a little bit of chocolate and been fine and my mom's friend's dog, a lab, has eaten chocolate before and did get an upset stomach from it one time. I think it depends on the breed. Chocolate is bad, but I think a little bit accidentally will not kill a large breed, but would kill a small breed. If you want to give your dog chocolate try carob, which can be found at your local pet store.
