I hate cats. I find dogs more loyal, gentle and friendly. Cats scratch and whilst dogs bite, I find dogs to be much more friendly and less prone to aggression. That said it depends on the breed doesn't it? I love spaniels.

I have always been a dog person, but I have discovered the advantage of having a cat after seeing them at my friends. You don't have to walk them, you can leave them home alone the whole day - they won't get too depressed, and they are histerically funny sometimes.

I'm starting to think that pets are just like children in that you need at least two of them for them to grow up right. So my advice is to start with one puppy and one kitten. Then they will both realize that neither one is the only game in town as they grow up.

Cats...they are clean, elegant, and absolutely never smell bad. If they love you, and they will if you love them, they are relatively trainable. My Chacha comes when he's called, sleeps on the foot of my bed and knows when I need a snoozle. When he gets on the kitcvhen counter, I tell him to get down and he does, but not without giving me the look and bitching at me a little...delightful! My dog, who is a sweet character, just comes to me for his needs. Give me kitties!

I love both. I prefer cats because they are easier to care for. They're more independent and can be left alone for a couple of days without a problem. Dogs are more like small children - you need a babysitter if you're going to be gone for long periods of time.

I must say that I enjoy both. I have 3 cats and a yellow lab. The cats are very entertaining to watch and the dog is fun to play with. I think they complement each other well. What one doesn't have the other makes up for. Cats are more independent and self sufficient. And the dog wants to be near us and likes to please. They get along just fine too.
