Default Can i own a dog and work a 9-5 job?

Me & my partner have found a dog at a local rehoming centre, he's 3 & has been left by his owners due to a baby...sad story. Is it fair for us to get the dog? He will be extremely loved & taken out on walks in the mornings, evenings & all weekend but will be left to his own devices in the day (mon-fri). In the summer months we have a yard with a kennel & a garden. But in winter he would be left in the house.

No. You need time for the dog to interact with humans.

Sure you can. Lots of people do. You will have to housebreak the pet and then adjust your schedule to be home before it poops on your sofa.

Can you not get anyone to give him a walk in the middle of the day? Its not right that he will be left for so long.

That should be ok, i think many people leave there dogs at home through the day. I am house sitting for my boss at the mo and he knows I'm eaving his dog in throughout the day. Sounds like you are really gonna love this dog, you go for it.

Unfortunatly most of us have to work ... lol It is fine to own a dog too, as long as he gets the attention he needs when you are home from work.

A dog this age should be fine being left alone while you work. I would recommend leaving it inside year round while working because of heat in the summer months. You may have a problem with it getting into trouble when you are gone. You can ask where you are adopting from what the history is on that. If needed you can kennel when you are gone. I do this with one of my dogs and she really loves it. I make it a positive thing for her. She gets treats when she goes in on her own and I have found her sleeping in there when she has free run of the house. You can talk to your vet about the benefits of crate training if needed. It is really a great thing for all in the family. Good luck and I hope you are able to give a homeless pet a great life!!!

It will be fine for you to get the dog. I have a dog (Miniature Dachshund) and both my husband and I work full time. We spend as much time as possible with him when we are home. He is very much loved, and well taken care of. He sleeps most of the day while we are at work anyway. He is like one of our kids... spoiled rotten. Get it if you want it. Love and enjoy the dog. It will brighten your lives.

Yes you can have a dog there is no reason not to have a dog. It sounds to me you'll be taking good care of your pet. Good luck.

Be prepared for some accidents, and you can't scold him hours after the fact. You'll probably need to get a crate for inside the house as well unless you know for a fact that he's house trained. But, yes, it's doable.

yes. Make sure you walk your dog before you leave for work and as soon as you get home. Make sure that the house isnt too hot, especially in the summer. Leave him plenty of water and food and maybe some chew toys too keep him entertained. Also, make sure you dont leave any trainers, wires, coats, ect. out because dogs tend to chew things when left alone. Apart from that all i can say is good luck and have fun!

Yes you can, as long as you walk the dog and give it plenty of love and attention its ok. I have a dog and me and my husband both work full-time, we've never had any trouble with our dog, he gets 3 walks a day loads of love and is happy.

yes my bf and i do it. we have 2 dogs we are both off on the weekends and he works a 9-5 job. I work 12pm-6pm I take the dogs out in the am and he takes them out in the pm. We let them stay out most of the night unless they start getting into things. They are very happy and well loved dogs. Just be sure to give it as much attention as u can. Also in the winter b sure to get a crate being outside in the summer will make house training hard in the winter. My dog went from being outside a lot to having no yard but a large apartment and we are still having trouble with her going in the house (it has been 3 months)good luck dogs are wonderful!

Well I appreciate ur good nature, but a dog needs attention most of the day. They can get bored and stressed, and if this dog has had a poor background then it may become destructful.I work full time but my mum looks after my dog at her house, he has a huge back garden to play in.

me and my boyfriend have a dog, we're out of the house all day, he manages but is always bursting for the loo when we get home!! I bet you're asking this coz you feel mean coz you got it from a rescue centre and feel he was neglected anyway! The dog will be fine, just fuss it even more when you get chance. if you could walk it during the day this would be nice but not essential.Good luck and enjoy being dog owners!

Sounds like a plan. Before winter comes, try and work out something for someone( you or your partner or a friend) to come home in the middle of the day for 30 min or so to give the new dog sometime to be out. Also, when you first get him, take a few days off of work so the dog can adjust to you.

It depends on both the dog and your living situation. If the dog can stand being alone for long periods of time and you have enough space for it to be able to go to the bathroom and get some exercise while you're gone, I think it's OK. If you get a dog that can't stand being alone and barks constantly while you're gone it will drive your neighbors insane.

my dog barks all day when hes left i used to work 7 - 12 and my partner worked 7- 4 so the dog was only left till about half 12 when i got in but my neighbours said that he constantly barked we bought him lots of toys to keep him occupied but it was companionship he missed not entertainment so i think it depends on the dog ask the rehoming centre if he is ok on his own if not then i think it would be unfair on the dog i dont like to be left alone all day so its not fair to expect a dog to mine is used to my company now since i left work but i still get told when i nip to town that he is barking for me and it can make him naughty as he has nothing to do so he might go through the bins or climb up on the side so instead of being praised for being good while we are out he gets told off for making a mess which is why he doesnt like us going out but if you can find a dog that is ok to be left alone then i cant see why not but remember dogs are hard work they are always there and if you go on holiday you have to organise kennels and have extra injections so it can cost a lot if you want to stay over at friends for the night you cant because of the dog it is like having kids lol
