Default Keeping up with your pets shots, etc.

I have heard that Vets., over drug your dog with more freqent shots then they really need. My neighbor surprised me when he told me his dog is 13years old and he never gave it heart worm, or regular doggy shots. And when I brought my young pop for her six months shots, she was the picture of health, and they insisted they give all the shots at one time must have been four injections, so when I brought her home she started acting like she could not find a comfertable spot, she was having a allergic reaction, so I rush her back to the vet, and since thet addmitted because they gave her so many shot were no sure which shot she was reacting to. So they gave her another bunch of shots, so I took her home. every thing seemed alright at first, but then she started scratching and wanting to come out of her skin. Really looking bad, I rushed her back to the vet and this time they told me to leave her with them, they put her on IV, and God knows what else they did but she was a very sick dog that almost died. Now all my dogs have not had a single shot for three years and far better then they were with all those shote. Any opinions? My dogs are indoor dogs and only go outside to play and take care of business. And how can a dog get rabies if I am out with them when they are outside?? My entire property in fenced in, and gated. And I still accompany then when they go out!

Default rabies vac.

You can have your dog's titer tested by your vet if you are reluctant to vac. for rabies regularly. It is more expensive, but if your dog has autoimmune issues or is elderly or for whatever reason this is an alternative. Eventually the dog will need to be vaccinated but probably not as often.

Thank you for both your imputs,I will go for the parvo and distemper shot I think it is a combo shot may have bardatello also. Since my dogs go to the groomers regularly they could pick up something. And they do like to sniff the poop of other dogs=big problem I can see. But I am very nervous about there reaction, will change vets thats for sure!! I used to bring my first dog regularly to the Vet and had a check up stools etc, now these new vets demand you have a physical before they give any shot and thats $42 each and the shot may be $7.50. The check up consist of lookng into the eyes, checking the heart, and checking for ear mites. The best vets I ever had in the past treated large farm animals as well as pets.

MGM, I get your point, I made an appointment for Wed morning, complete physical, blood check, stool for heart worm, and the dreaded shots. I will be very vervous for the female. I am interested in your comment on Interceptor monthly Tabs? Have never heard of them, do I have the name correct, and will speak to the Vet about it in place of heart guard? If I am correct I think there is a Heart Guard Plus thats kill round worms too. Like I do not want to use something too harsh on my dogs, example was going to change to bio Spot to replace frontline and was told bio spot is a strong chemical that gets into the dogs bloodstream and frontline is much milder affect on the dog system. I am in the dark but want to get the job done with the least trauma to my dogs systems, what is your feeling?? Thank you for your input, I know in my heart you are right, it is just that experience with the Vet turned me away, and also hearing about vets giving shots more often then needed!

Well I took my little guys down to the vet yesturday, and I did something on the drive down, I turned right on a one way four lane road,(heading wrong way) fortunately no traffic so I hit a hard 180 turn and got out of potential trouble. Thats how nervous I was for my girl with her allergic reaction to shots! I gave her a benadryl at 7AM and at 1030AM she got only the distemper/parvo and all went well. My new vet feels she may have been given too my shots at the same time and not have a allergic problem. She will get the rest of her shots but one at a time two weeks apart. As for the people that live next door and have never taken there dog to the vet and it is 13years old, well its like playing Russian roulette, my guys are too important to me,and most important find a vet you feel comfortable with! Thanks! Think I am going to have a party on my boat tonight, you all are welcome to come!
