Default Should i shave my Saint Bernard

Im wondering if it would be a good idea to Shave her for the summer months due to heat issues. Ive heard that some dogs coats actually help keep them cooler but ive talked to some Newfie owners around town and 1 breeder actually shaves her Newfs during the summer. I just want my dog to be a little more comfortable during the hot summer months.

If I were in the same situation would call a few groomers and get a consensus. My neighbor has it done to her long hair dog and it comes out quite well. It has to feel better in hot weather, I know I feel good when I get my hair cut close in the summer, Yes, I cut my hair with my dogs grooming clippers, I get my moneys worth out of them!lolo

oh, I ment to enclude not to shave your dog but a close clip, A shave would definately expose the skin to sun burn, and with a close clip you can check for ticks etc., better since it is a summer porblem!

Default Hope it is not too late for suggestions

im sorry i only just read this post, you may have already been to the groomers. I have an alternative suggestion for you, may be too late for this summer now but for next it might be an idea.
I have a long coat Akita, and when last summer came around the poor bugger really felt it and hard, I was getting ready to clip the coat too, when i discovered cooling vests for dogs. I bought one and it really did make all the difference. We purchased from silver eagle outfitters over the net, buying the in the cool champion range, but their are many different brands out there all working on a similar concept. The main reason we went this brand vest though is that they have extra extra large sizes, you should get one that will fit your dog too.

Oooh! Thanks, Nattie! Those cooling vests are an interesting idea for my guy, since he has long hair and the heat will be unbearable for him this Summer.

Beautiful Saint! Someone I used to work with in a vet office shaved her Saint - he was SO much happier, you could tell. He wasn't so restless, trying to find a cool spot to lay. I say, try it - it will grow back!

we live in new zealand and these people in kerikeri used to give their husky about a number 3 hair clip, she was so much happier as she coudl run around like she loved to longer than wiht her heavy thick coat.
