Default need advice

I have just gotten a dog from a neighbor. They found this dog in a washing machine at a hunt club. I cleaned him up and fed him and he is now up to a good weight and is very energetic. The vet thinks he is a cross between a beagle and a jack russell. The only problem with him is that he pees and poops in the floor. We have tried to crate train him and he just went to the bathroom in his crate. How do I correct this behavior. I don't believe in leaving a dog outside all the time so I must correct this situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

good for you that you won't just throw him outside.

are you feeding him at set times each day? he should be getting fed am & pm & walked about 20 minutes later. walking helps stimulate the bowels & usually works best if on a schedule.

is he being taken outside to pee often enough? lots of praise when he does it right - say nothing when he goes in the house - not easy I know. really for awhile I'd be taking him out every hour until he gets more reliable.

if you can't give him your complete attention - in the crate. you can leash him to you in the house so you can watch him closer. did the vet know about this & check him for a UTI?

what are you feeding? that often makes a difference in how much they poop. stuff with a lot of fillers in goes straight through the dog & becomes land mines real quick

is his crate to big? it should only be large enough for him to assume all normal positions & stretch out. no blankets

did you google crate training? house breaking? there is a lot of info out there.

Thanks for the advice. I have been feeding him at the same time and letting him out at the same time daily. The crate is correct for his size so I will further research that situation. I have been feeding him a cheaper brand food, so I think I will buy him a better food tomorrow.
