What type of dog?
Hi I am new here and I am looking to get a dog. I have never had one before but I want a smaller dog, something that does not grow big. I want something in the size of a shih tzu but white. So my question is what kind of dogs are there that are small, have white hair. I know it is broad but I am not sure what I am looking for, I am sort of new and clueless. Thanks to all that can help

well i saw a white one on television a while back, i thought about it a long time and I decided that it was what i really wanted, plus a small dog is better for my lifestyle than a big one

That makes sense. Do you remember what show it was on? What kind of personality are you looking for in the dog? Shorthaired or longhaired? Easily maintainable or is that not a BIG concern?

Also I was just wondering if you were sure you wanted an all white dog. I had two white cats and one of them rolled in hair dye once and had dark purple spots for a couple weeks cause we couldn't get it out.

you should never get a dog for looks. that is a recipe for disaster.
you need to consider your lifestyle - how much exercising you are willing to do. are you home all day that you would be an appropriate home for a puppy or should you be looking for adults? is daily grooming an issue? what about needing to go to the groomers every 6 - 8 weeks?
will you have time for obedience classes? you will need to learn about the health issues associated with the particular breed that you are interested in.
will $$ be an issue? vet visits aren't cheap & you have to plan for emergencies.
just a few of the things beside looks to consider

Once again, if you contact me by email, that will make this a lot easier.
I know you said you wanted that kind of dog and I'll help you try to figure out what it was and help you do some research on the breed before buying one to make sure that it's what you want. If it's what I'm thinking it is, it will require some grooming, however if you can handle that yourself, it doesn't need to be professionally done. I'd like to discuss this and your preferences. Please contact me by email and we'll see what we can do.

A couple i can think of to start your research on Bichon Frise, West Highland White Terrier, Shitzu, Maltese.........all little dogs, of varying nature and requirements. All kinda cute, if you like the little ones. From my understanding the Bichon Frise can be quite a wonderful adaptable dog, and may be appropriate as a first dog, nature and temprament wise.
Given that I am not certain on your grooming or exercise prefrences etc, i disregarded that, but it always worth considering when choosing your breed. If you dont have the patience for grooming, or the money to pay for it some of these breeds may not be appropriate. But I only named them as a starting point for you to begin some research.
Regardless of what you choose, I would encourage you to try and avoid the designer dogs, (plenty of info why if you look) and when you have made your decision, go to a really good, established breeder that will be able to provide you with a companion who should be sound, healthy, health checked parents for the best chance of a long term companion and best friend.
Good luck with your search.

good point nattie, the designer dogs are manufactured by money grubbing irresponsible people that could care less about the dogs.
have you considered looking at breed rescues & shelters? most dogs that are in shelters are not there because of any fault of their own - but their humans that failed them

My problem is that instead of letting people want what they want and do things their way, you attack them about their decisions. You don't even find out all the information before judging these people. People are coming here for help and you jump on them about the things they say before knowing the facts. That's my problem!

Seems to me you just have a problem handling good advice...especially if you don't like what your hearing!

I haven't attacked anyone - I simply gave her some things she needs to think about before making a decision. I can only address the information as she wrote it, & for the record I have a LOT more experience at it than you.
you want to just let her blindly get a small white dog - shelters are full of dogs people went out & bought & then dumped because they did no research before they got it. nor did they consider what a good fit for their lifestyle was.
