Default Golden retriever questions

I am opening this thread as we are deciding to get a golden retriever as a pet. We are going to put in a gate to fully fence off the back yard but we are unsure of how high it should be to prevent a lab from jumping over it. The lab we are adopting is 10 months old and has grown up with another golden retriever. Is it OK to separate the 2 dogs from eachother? Will the behaviour drastically change?

As more questions come to mind ill post this here, thanks

I am thoroughly confused here. labs & goldens are two different breeds but while I think labs are more inclined to jump than goldens I wouldn't want a fence or gate any less than 4 feet & many will jump 6 feet.

the dog really shouldn't be outside unsupervised tho.

there are arguments both ways as to keeping the pair together. I would hate to see my two split up, but many actually do better

sorry i meant golden retriever instead of lab. About the gate though. We are looking for something more perminant so it must be high enough for a full grown golden.

wouldn't you make the gate the same as the rest of the fence?

I'm saying a minimum of 4' & there is no guarantee with that. if left alone for long periods of time, it will probably start digging.

if you are talking about for play time when someone is with the dog, then I would say 4' should be relatively safe
