| puppies...maybe
hi, i am very new to this forum and am not sure where i should post this, so i decided here might be the best place.
my dog has more than likely bred with our neighbors dog; we live on farms and the two dogs go back and forth. well, my girl is a lab pyrenees mix, beautiful dog, and the dog she most likely bred to is a terrier mix. how you ask could he manage to get her pregnant? easy, she lays down for him. but here is my real question; if she were to have puppies and i was to train them, house break them, make them kids safe, dog safe, potty trained, and all that jazz, do you think someone would be interested in buying a mutt puppy that is trained? i know i couldn't do a whole lot of training if i wanted to sell them as puppies, but as much as could be humanly possible do you think that people would be interested? and if so, how much should i sell them for?
thanks so much!
-a fellow dog lover

IMO you should get her spayed immediately, then there would be no problem. I gather this just happened very recently so it would still be safe
un-spayed she is at very high risk for a serious uterine infection called pyometra. it is usually fatal
once they go into their first heat they are at 80% higher risk for cancer.
the males are at risk for several types of cancer
no it would not be a good idea to spend months training as people want puppies. you can't really expect much until they are 4 - 5 months & by then they are no long that cute little fuzz ball.
it is very hard to find "good" homes & I would hope you would require the new owners get the puppies neutered. large dog = lotsa puppies. we are slaughtering over 6 million pets a year in shelters.
do you know anything about whelping puppies? what if she would need a c-section?

thanks for the advise. we were thinking of spaying her, but i wanted to find out even if it would be possible to let her have puppies. now the cancer really scares me. since she has already bred with the dog, even after we spay her, is the chance of her having cancer still that high?
no i have never delivered a dog, but i have had my share of goats. i researched it and it seems about the same thing, but from what i found everyone makes it sound very risky and dangerous, is this true? also, i couldn't find anything on how old a dog should be before you breed it, do you know?
thanks again, and we will be sure to spay her. although, she is still bleeding, should we wait until her cycle is done?

i agree with Sue get her spayed ASAP.
it will cost more but you can get her spayed while she is in heat .
ther is also a shot they can give her to halt the pregnacy

okay, i just called our vet and she said that since my dog has not had her vacinations that i need to bring her in, get the vacinations and then wait two weeks to come in and get her spayed. i am guessing it has been somewhere around 5 days to a week that she has been with this other dog, do you think that to wait two weeks is not a good idea? should i get the shot to hault the pregnacy, do you think that would be best?

The question about the shot would be something to discuss with the vet..I am curious though as to why your dog has not been vaccinated...I'm not trying to be mean but it seems like you've been irresponsible with her care.

Well I new Sue would have something to say with this post!! Our two present dogs are both fixed male and female, but you know our little girl some times gives me the impression she would have liked to be a mommy, she has her special hedgehog toy that she likes to carry around and protect if the male dog comes too close, I say she is playing mommy!lolo It can be real tempting to breed when you know nothing about what you are getting into, I did not know until learning from our Sue, But I had a gut feeling I may be getting in over my head if I had! Besides I would not be able to give or sale one puppy, they would all have to live with us. wow!

reeskujo you weren't being rude at all. the reason she hasn't had these vaccinations is because we have another friend who breeds dogs and highly recommends using natural things. now we do do the required shots, such as the rabies shot, but anything besides that we usually don't do. and even for myself, i rarely ever take prescription medicine; i use herbs and everyday vitamins. so we usually try to keep as minimal vaccinations possible.
we have her scheduled to go in tomorrow to get her shots and then she will go back in two weeks. i will be so glad when she will have been spayed, it has been rough keeping her inside since she is used to roaming the yard (we live on a farm).
i know what you mean BobSD, i sometimes get carried away with the thought of little fluffy puppies scurrying all through the house and finding new and mysterious things to play with out side. but when Sue mentioned that over 6 million pets are being killed it brings me right back down to earth.

thank you all - ( flutters eyelashes ) seriously to try to answer your questions.
unfortunately spaying her now does not diminsh her risk of mammary tumors. it does irradicate any possibility of pyometra or uterine cancer.
your vet gave you an excellent option & I'm glad you are taking it. she should not suffer any emotional problems from this, she would tho at 7 weeks & up
the "shot" is called the mis-mate or mis-match shot & can have some serious side effects. 1 is pyometra no you should do exactly what you have planned.
please keep us posted
