The very same thing happened to us. We just made sure that we spent extra time with the one that was left, taking extra walks and rides together, etc. Remember, if it was you losing your best friend, you would be very lost for a while also. Every dog, just like humans, take their own time mourning the loss of a loved one, and each time is different for each dog. But just to make sure that there is nothing else wrong, bring the dog in for a full check up with your vet. After that, if everything is fine physically, you may want to consider a new friend. Try it out first, with introducing the dog to other dogs in a neutral setting. If you have friends with dogs, try to set up a "play date" with them and see if this doesn't perk your dog up. If these ideas show you that your dog would be open to the idea of a new companion, give it a try. There is always some chance of resentment, but most dogs like the company of others like them. They are pack animals, after all, and your dog has lost part of his/her pack. Hope these ideas help.
