Default dog walks out of room when name called

We have a great Golden Retriever! However, he has one strange personality trait that is hard to explain.
When we call his name, ("hey buddy or "here buddy")he walks out of the room wagging his tail! It's like a game to him!
Our man's best friend wont even come! But in the middle of this he grabs a sock or toy whiel wagging his tail! Any advice to break him of his habit?

Lol he sounds really cute but you are right, that is a problem. One thing you can try is when he starts walking away go over to him firmly say no then lead him over to where you called him from. Try that out, it usually works for stuff like that. Good luck!

NO NO NO...

He is walking away when called for a reason....I read a book about dog training, and how 75% of dogs will not come when called by their owners...

Reason being.....Almost always a dog is called by its owner to either stop what he's doing, to be taken away from somehting he is enjoying or he is being called ofr the specific purpose to repromand the dog...NEVER DO THAT...

Never use your dogs name when saying "NO"...He should never associate his name in a negetive context.

So if a dog leaves and does not come when called, It means he has at some point associated "Come" with "Oh no what did i do"

You need to make come a game...and it sounds like it would be perfect for him!!!

This is directly out of one of my books...

Have you and another family member go into different rooms of the house...2 is fine, but the more the better...

Make sure everyone has a soft treat, cheese works best...

Take turns having everyone say "Where are you"....Insted of COME....

Start him out leading him to the first room to the cheese for his reward and tons of hugs and kisses...

Then within minutes he will begin to relize this is an awesome game!

Have everyone take turns for a few days....In different rooms saying "Buddy....Where are you"...as soon as he arrives give him the treat and tossle around on the floor with him for a bit...

And now forever when ever he hears "Where are you"...His mind will trigger and say...OMG Its time for my favorite game in the word...And he will come with out fail every time!!!

The Book is Breed Specific....But is located in every single "AKC" Book. Mine happens to be for Great danes, But the training section, basic commands and other items in the book are all dog specific....I find their breed specific books to be very helpful and informative....You should get one on your Golden Retriever, I Purchused mine at Boarders, But Im sure it can be found on Amazon, or ebay. Or even the AKC Wbsite.

it was a method I had to use with one of my great dane pups....My one Great dane Pup was working fine with the word "Come"....We had him since he was 8 weeks old. The other was not, he would run away from you, or into his cage...We recieved him at 12 weeks old...A large difference in age training wise!! So we had to resort to other methods, Which ment Re-Training the First pup so they would both know and understand the command....

I doubted it at first, Though now I am not sure why I ever did....Within Minutes, He was Trained....And I am not exagertaing!!!

We have been training him with this method for 2 weeks now, and he can be in the backyard playing and I can be in the house...And all I have to do is say "Mr. Big....Where are you"......And he Drops everything he is doing, and comes charging in!!!

I am still amazed i didnt learn this method sooner for my other dogs...because it is really fantastic!

We still train him, My husband and I hide all over the house, And use the command "Where are you".....And when he arrives We love and praise him and the reward him with cheese, I even hide in the bathtub sometimes....

So now he always thinks as "COME" As a rewarding event!!!!
