if you are looking for a non-allergic dog you should always go to a trusted breeder... but dont forget to ask your local shelter. There are many pets in shelters now looking for a new home to take them in.

But they both shed and chihuahuas are not usually very good with kids.
My good friend has a bichon frise/shih tzu mix that does not shed and is good with kids. You could look into those breeds and see if you like them

Non-Shed & Small
You should get a Toy Poodle, Bishon Frise, or Shih Tzu.
I have faith that since you are looking for a small breed you have all ready taught your children how to be gentle. Small Dog puppies are exactly like babies.
I personally dislike all three breeds; but those are the only ones I can guarantee to you that won't cause allergies or shed a lot.
DO NOT BUY A DESIGNER DOG! (i.e. poodle mixes, bishon mixes, etc) When you buy a non-pure bred dog you are contributing to the problem of over population. The only dogs worthy of being bred are those in the AKC or UKC competing for points. If the dog finishes & titles they have the right to be bred. This means they have earned the points to obtain "CH" in front of their name. Do not buy a dog unless it was Champion Sired!

This is not exactly true. Getting a mutt can be good. There are less chance of health problems and sometimes they are better tempered. You can get a mixed breed or not, it is up to you. This is not nesicarly contributing to the over population problem.

Hi Candis,
Take your time learning about the different breeds with their pros and cons to see which best fits your family. There are many desirable dogs both pure bred and not, it just depends on what qualities to which you place value and are worth seeking.
And of course, what kind of a dog lover would I be if my own dog was not recommended, a chocolate english cocker is very nice. :-D

I also have a maltese. Much harder to train.
has a mind of her own.
the kids will have more fun with a goldendoodle. take my word
for it.

I would advise you that, if the dog doesn't shed, then there will be a bit of grooming upkeep. I can't tell you how many times I've had a dog come in to be groomed and the owners didn't realize that they actually had to brush their dog to keep it cute and fluffy. Then, the dog usually has to be shaved down because it's too matted to save the hair. For young kids, any truly small dogs will be in acute danger of being stepped on or played with too roughly. I have heard good things about Bichin Frises. They aren't too small and they definitely don't shed. They do, however, require brushing multiple times a week and regular professional grooming.

OperaChick is right. Nonshedding = high upkeep. Regular brushing and frequent trips to the groomer are necessities. With a couple of exceptions. Chinese Crested Hairless and corded Poodles or a Puli. But corded coats have their own issues. The cords don't require brushing, but you do have to split them once in a while. And that's something a breeder or groomer will have to show you. And bathing a corded dog is quite a process.
Thinking on it, a Chinese Crested Hairless might be a good option.
