I'm pondering going to stay in Japan for an extended period of time (not sure how long exactly) and would very much like to take my dog, an Akita, with me. I've heard that it's very difficult to actually get them between the two countries, and that it's a very time consuming process. Is this true? Is it feasible at all to try to bring a dog with me if I'm not going to be there for years at a time?

I've looked about online for any guides or general information about transporting dogs internationally, specifically between the States and Japan, but so far, nothing...

Do plan to bring your dog or have him shipped? This might help: Transporting Pets and Animals. I heard the cost of traveling with your dog will vary depending on his size and weight.
