His diet is not rich enough and he supplements missing nutritional elements this way.
Nature has strange ways.
Get him some food supplements and change his normal food. I would try and give him more meat only slightly cooked.

Cacaphagia is common in many dogs. One theory is that they are looking for some "recycled" nutrients that they might be missing in their diet already. So far, that's the best theory anyone has come up with. You'll need to teach him the "leave it" command.

However, I've observed something else in my own dog: She loves horse dung. She not only eats it, but rolls in it as well. She is afraid of horses, cattle, all livestock, really. I figure she must know they are big enough to trample her. My theory is that she wants to make herself smell like them, so that anything else (a bigger dog) will avoid her. She likes to get my and my husband's scent on herself as well. She's a bit of a scaredy-dog, really.

My dogs love to get a hold of some horse manure. Eat it, rub in it, it's great to them. I have to really keep an eye on the litter box too, they think THAT is a mighty fine treat! Ugh! They don't mess with their own feces or another dogs. I was told once that if dog food companies made the dog food to truly only appeal to the dogs and not to us humans then we wouldn't be able to have it in the house. Look how much they love to roll in something that is dead if they get the chance. They are dogs.

The simple fact is, dogs love poo. Cow poo, horse poo, cat poo, baby poo, even their own poo sometimes. There are numerous theories as to why, but I seriously think it's just because they like it.

Really, the only thing you can do is put a leash on your pup and teach him "Leave It." And that might not work either, when you aren't out with him to enforce it.

Some advices for raw food diet, you can also include some vegetables when you prepare them.
