Puppy Camping - ok or not ok?
Hi,
I have a ten week old Chocolate Lab that has had two of the three shots so far. We are thinking about going camping on a secluded lake this weekend. Should I be concerned about her swimming in the lake? She doesn't eat alot of "foreign substances" but I am curious about the effect water intake might have. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Puppy camping is a good method for socialization training. Your pup can interact with other puppies and dogs.

Just make sure the place is safe. Be also aware with ticks/fleas.

If you are regular campers, and intend on it being something in the future you want to do with your dog, the younger the better to help him get used to it. Given the vacinations are not quite finnished, I would be watchfull of your pup with unknown dogs just incase. Alternatively you may be able to get in touch with the camp ground manager or whomever oversees it, and ask if there have been any recent reports of dogs with parvo/ kennel cough etc in the area.
As a regular camping family, who takes pets with us, i strongly reccomend that you carry water from home for your pup. It can reduce the chance of tummy upset and sloppy messes.

Taking a puppy that has not been fully immunized to any public place is very risky. That includes parks, pet stores, grooming shops and even camp grounds. Puppies' immunity is not instantaneous with vaccines and it takes up to 16 to 20 weeks for them develop full immunity. Until that time, he or she is vulnerable to any number of diseases regardless of immunization. Parvo is a deadly virus and campgrounds are a huge risk for a puppy with a vulnerable immune system. Please reconsider taking your puppy with you. Here is a link that explains how the immune system works.

P.S. Just noticed that you posted ten days ago so you've probably already taken your puppy with you.

Camping is a great activity that both the pet and the owner could enjoy. It would be beneficial for the physical health of your dog to keep them active and to a time for bonding with her master. If you are going to camp near the lake, and take her to boating or swimming, you have to make sure the premise is safe for you and your dog. It would be ideal to bring a life jacket not just for you but also for your dog. As we all know, not all dogs are good swimmers. Beware of the ticks/fleas also. Enjoy the camping
