Dachshunds can suffer from two forms of back problems. One is congenital and the other mechanical.

The congenital form of intervertebral disc disease usually shows changes in the disc spaces by age 2. If they have this form of IVD they are more susceptible to mechanical injury.

The other form relates to their elongated spine, short legs, and the amount of torque they can put on their spine. Jumping, climbing, and being overweight can all contribute to spinal damage.
