Hello everyone! I am new to this site and have found it to be pretty helpful so far.
I am extending an invitation to anyone with weinder dogs!!
It would be great to get all types of stories about your pooch of the Daschund breed since I now have a short haired puppy named charlie.
Its my first time being a dog owner and he's teaching me a lot so far. But if anyone has more information on this type of breed and their little quirks and what makes them the best, please reply!

You can ask questions here so anyone who has doxies could give advice. Also try to look for communities specific for doxie lovers.

Dachshund owner/breeder for over 30 years, although I no longer breed.
I had smooth minis in the past, and now have a longhaired standard and longhaired mini. They're great dogs.
I'm sure you've already been told, but the biggest favor you can do your pup is keep his weight under control. And that's not always an easy task. Dachshunds are inventive food thieves, and shameless beggars. But it's sooo important not to let them become overweight. Not only is it hard on their backs, but Dachshunds are prone to diabetes when they get fat.
My Doxies have always been fearless and rash. They love to play, love to dig, love to get into mischief. But they make you laugh when you catch them in the act, and you can't stay mad.
They're also smart. Too smart, sometimes. I've had to put child-proof locks on my cupboards, even my refrigerator, to keep the dogs out. Sometimes I think they're really just support systems for a stomach, LOL.

I have heard they are really smart dogs. And have been told that my puppy is now ready to be trained. Any hints on the easiest way with this breed? Besides loading him up on treats?

Besides getting him into an obedience class, you can invent games that will teach him lots of things.
For example, I've taught my boys "Go Over" by sitting on the floor with my legs stretched out in front of me. I have the dog on my right, throw a toy on my left at the same time I say "Go Over". They jump over my legs to chase the toy, and the toy is their reward.
You can also use behavior marking. When you see your dog is about to do something you want him to do, say the command, such as "Sit" just as his little butt starts to go down. Then praise him for sitting. In no time at all, he'll know "Sit".
I taught one of my dogs to sneeze on command this way. I noticed he'd always sneeze right before he barked. So as soon as I saw the sneeze coming, I'd say "Sneeze" then "Good boy!"
You can teach him all kinds of cute things that way. And it's fun for both of you.

Thats SO funny! I too can get Charlie to sneeze on command. And its generally when I ask him a question. I think it has something to do with the questioning tone in my voice that signals him to sneeze.
Maybe something to do with the breed. Either way, I just thought it was something funny my dog did.

Daschund dogs are very energetic! I had a neighbor with a daschund. One time after it ran down the steps it somehow hurt it's back. Maybe it has something to do with the long back, and just not enough strength to manage it. |
