Slip leads - your opinions?
I have a very weird opinion about slip leads - I use them, but to most people definatly wouldnt recommend them. They are dangerous and can kill a dog in the wrong hands, but I use them on trained dogs and wouldnt use anything else..of course if I go on a walk around the streets so they can stretch they're legs then I use collars (for the big breeds) or harnesses (for the small breeds) but in the field I find it easier to use a slip lead and I can just tie it around my waist when I dont need it. So what are your opinions?

Some people used it improperly causing damage on dog's trachea... Seems like you're doing it right, sorry I don;t have any experience with that.

You can go with a slip lead or the separate lightweight snake chain collar and very very narrow braided nylon or leather lead. Both are acceptable.

I don't really like the snake chain collars, I was told to use one with my JRT but it kepts pulling out hairs it was definatly the right chain but it got caught where it loosened then when he tugged it closed up, same with normal chain collars so I went back to plain braided dracon for the collar and waxed dracon for the leash part and pig skin for the leather stop.

Slip lead and Gentle Lead collars have worked very well in my training. I prefer them to just about everything else. If the dog is small enough a harness should be enough. If they are powerful larger dogs, you don't want them pulling you down the street. The only way it's going to kill your dog is if you tie it up and leave it un-attended. You'll know when the lead is hurting them and becoming a problem.

I think it's just a matter of using it properly. Slip lead, dog deash, training collars and the like are created to help you to train a dog.

It doesn't matter what type of collar you use to train dogs as long as you use it properly and consider the safety of your dog.

While training our border collie my mom used a choke collar for correction while trying to socialize her (we got her when she was MAAAAJORLY dog aggressive), I figure it didn't do any harm and it sure checked her the moment she tried to attack anything. While training my dog (when I get one lol) I plan to use a harness, with a short lead on a chain collar in case something comes up and I need to grab it. That way I can check aggression without having to use the collar constantly.

Largely an unnecessary tool.

I could not live without them! I use the thick rope style around the house, for moving dogs, in emergencies when I need to leash up quickly, etc. For walks I use a gentle leader or pinch collar dependiong on the dog (I have 6) and when we are out hiking I use a leather leash and a buckle collar with a big cow bell.
