Thumbs up Hidden Dog Talents

Does your dog have a hidden talent? Mine does. I have a white purebred shitzu, about 3 or 4 years old, and his name is Darby. He has to tricks that are triggered by random things. Trick #1: Whenever I play the recorder, he sounds a strange houl that sounds like he is singing along! Trick #2: Whenever I pet him for a little bit, and then I stop, he will come up to you and paw at you until you start petting him again. Neat huh? :-D

My little Whiz has a pretty cool trick. He tries to barter with you.

It started when he was a puppy. We always took away things he wasn't supposed to be chewing on and gave him a toy or bone instead.

So one morning I was having eggs for breakfast, and Whiz wanted one. I told him "Don't beg!" and pushed him away. He disappeared for a couple of minutes, only to return with one of his treasures, a candy wrapper he'd snitched, in his mouth. He put the wrapper on my knee, looked at the eggs, looked at the wrapper, looked at the eggs, looked at the wrapper. It was clear he wanted to make a trade. And how do you tell a baby he doesn't have enough money to buy an egg? So he got a piece of egg, LOL.

Since then he's done the same thing many times. He uses a toy or some other treasure he has stashed away to "buy" something he wants.

Vetgroomer, that was a cute story! I just got my dog a month ago and he already came with some learned tricks, like sit, lay down, and such. But my favorite is when I tell him "up". He will balance on his back legs and reach his front paws up like hes waving 'farewell'. It's so cute. I should take a picture of it sometime.

Vetgroomer, that is a very clever dog, lol! Our Annie has taken to bringing my husband her rawhide when he gets home from work in the evenings-- even if he doesn't have anything to trade-- apparently she is just trying to share.

But Annie also has a special talent: she can sniff out tomato hornworms and carefully pluck them off the plants!
