Default whats the best type of collar

hey,

Im getting a dog next month and i am wondering what type of collar would be best.

Im sure we're getting a labrador or some type like that. you know something big.

so what in your opinion is best?

Fabric?
Leather?
Metal Chain..?
nylon?
what about buckle?
Break away safety collars?
Nylon slip collars?
Limited slip collars?
choke chains..?

Thanx!

Prisca.

Here are my thoughts as a trainer of almost 13 years as well as a dog owner and breeder.

Fabric (more expensive than nylon and not any better)
Leather (a great option, rolled leather collars will do minimal coat damage!)
Metal Chain.. (NEVER on a puppy and ONLY when training you NEVER EVER leave any type of chain or training collar on an unsupervised dog, they can strangle and die)
nylon (another great option especialy if you have a growing puppy)
what about buckle (I like the plastic quick-clip style better then buckles, but I think that is just a personal choice)
Break away safety collars (good if your dog is playing with other dogs or outside in the yard but not for walking)
Nylon slip collars (again ONLY for supervised training, if they get stuck on something they can choke to death)
Limited slip collars (great for training... never leave on unattended dog!)
choke chains.. (see metal chains)

Look into Lupine company collars they are GREAT!!! Hope this helps you

I think leather is the best type of collar. They last a long time and seem to be comfortable for the dogs.

Hi prisca, we use leather collars, Kato has had the same one for nearly 18 months, I have never noticed bad odur of the collar.

We have found the leather collar has lasted much longer than any of the other ones, we used to have to replace fabric/ nylon collars every few months.

Training collars such as the choke chains, halti/ head collars etc, all very good but are just that, training tools that you should only consider useing for short periods of time under your supervision.

I prefer the nylon snap collars. They are adjustable, and have pretty colors. My puppy, Buckles is a mud puppy. Where's there's mud, she will find it, roll in it, and then coming running to me. Oh yea. I can also wash these, & hang to dry.

Dogs only sweat from the pads of their feet. But a collar of any type will get smelly from other things. Leather can be cleaned with saddle soap or Murphy's Oil Soap. Nylon or fabric collars can be soaked in soap and water and scrubbed with a nail brush, or you can tie them up in a pillow case and toss them in the washing machine.

To begine with, choose something a little cheaper as your pup will want to eat at it.

Oh wait, did you say puppy or an adult?

Oh that bad memory of mine

Ohm prefers no collar. So if we can get away with that, which is most of the time, we do with no collar. Otherwise, when we're out in public or on the job he wears a nylon martingale collar. I prefer martingales over traditional buckle collars because Ive had fewer dogs slip a martingale than a fancy catalog collar.

My dog has a number of collars made of nylon and leather. I like the nylon collars the most for they can be washed easily. Leather ones are kinda stylish on the other hand.
