We're Expecting!
Another dog, that is. We are finished producing human offspring, and our home and work would not be ideal for fostering/adopting another child, even though I would very much like to have more. My dh heard and understood my "need," and told me I could get another dog or puppy. So I set to work scouring the lists of dogs up for adoption. I found a rescue within my state, less than 300 miles away that has a dog that meets most of our criteria, and has a similar temperament to our Annie. I submitted an application, and heard back from the coordinator with positive results-- she's already spoken with our vet, and got a "great report!" She's going to forward the list of questions I sent to the dog's caregivers and call me back with answers, and arrange a meet and greet. I'm soooo excited!
So, I was wondering... since the dog is a good day-trip away from us, what are some ways we can help Annie prepare for the introduction of a new dog into our pack, and also help prepare the new dog to meet us and Annie? What kind of complications can I expect with assimilating a new dog into a household with an existing one?
BTW, here are the stats on both dogs: Annie (current dog) 5 year old, spayed female, English Springer Spaniel mix, tends to be shy with human strangers, loves to meet/play with other dogs.
New Dog: 1 year old, spayed female, appears to be an English Setter mix. Also shy. Was being starved and kept outside on a chain before she was rescued. Plays well with other dogs, not yet housebroken, currently being kept in a large outdoor kennel with other rescues.
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions you can offer!
