The merle markings and coloring are indicative of the Australian Shepherd. It is difficult to tell breed when they are puppies as this one is. But most likely it is and Aussie.

I agree with Aussie. Maybe even pure but hard to tell when their so little. Since it was found in a box its possible a puppy mill or back yard breeder dumped it:x

Bless the little baby that it was found by your friend!

That's a blue merle Australian Shepherd. Poor dog, I can't believe someone would do that, good thing you rescued him/her.

Yep thats a distinct Aussie marking! Its possible she's still a mix (if the aussie line is strong enough, the eye thing can show up) but from the looks of it, she looks like she might be pure.

She shouldnt require more than a good brushing a few times a week to help keep the shedding down and not get matted. As far as health, I'm not all that sure what if anything you should watch out for.

I don't want to alarm you or anything but I have this book that tells what each breed of dog is prone to (heading in book is --Breed-Specific Health Problems) I give this listing so you are aware if your dog ever gets any symptoms--'down the road'--also so you can try some preventative measures like maybe some supplements or cautions to take into consideration or to catch something in time before more damage can be done, etc---hope you get my drift. Also you would know what to look up on the computer to find symptoms or aids for the problem, etc. On an up note--these dogs (Australian Shepard) have a pretty low list compared to some of the other breeds listed in this book. Hmmm-although I'm wondering if they would have the same problem as the German Shepard in not being able to utilize the nutrients very well in their food (read my posting under German Shepards-Nutrition) If they do have that same problem I would definately be feeding raw---see some of the web addresses under some of my other posts--esp. the ones w/ the title--Because you love your dog --and I would supplement also w/something like Prozyme (tells about it on the web.) This stuff can vary widely in price (like everything else) depending on where you get it--If you ever decide to get it--ask me about the best(cheapest) place to get it and it's not the best price through the vet.--My vet charges about 7 to 10 dollars more for a # jar ! I can get it through this catalog for about $20.00 (if they don't go up in price right now---Prices are good for awhile --never know might change when new catalog comes out the way things are going now a days! And you only add 1/4th tsp. to each cup of food which would give you enough to put on a total of 363 cups of food (1# jar size). On the jar it has written: clinically proven natural enzyme food supplement--I use it all the time (and I don't even have a shepard dog) for my 2 dogs.
Boy, I got to get on w/this-getting late, late--wish I knew short-hand-LOL

Here is the list: BLOOD-CLOTTING DISORDER-Prone to this disorder due to coagulation factor VIII deficiency.
CATARACT-In elderly dogs the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing a partial or total loss of vision.
DEAFNESS-A partial or total loss of hearing.
EPILEPSY-A brain disorder in which the dog experiences seizures (convulsions). I don't know if this would help for this situation or not, but I know that a lack of magnesium is indicated as a possible reason for some seizures in dogs--Maybe best to word this: that it could maybe stop seizures frm happening---read this somewhere long time ago--some cockers are prone to seizures (which is the kind of dog I have--no seizures though.(so far anyhow) Just can't quit talking--Did you know that most people in the USA do not have enough magnesium in their system! OK now, moving on!
EYE ABNORMALITIES-Prone to a condition in which the lens in the eye slips out of place and an abnormal developement of the retina(s).
HERNIA-A rupture of the wall of an internal organ in the groin area.
HIP DYSPLASIA-An abnormal developement of the hip joint(s).
HYPOTHYROIDISM-A common disease of thyroid hormone deficiency. The thyroid regulates your dog's metabolism. A large number of skin problems in dogs are caused by thyroid disease.
JAW ABNORMALITY-Prone to have a lower jaw that is longer than the upper jaw or to have an overshot jaw, a condition in which the upper jaw is too long for the lower jaw.
LIVER ABNORMALITIES-Prone to an abnormal formation of blood vessels in the liver.
NEURONAL CEROID-LIPOFUSCINOSIS-An accumulation of fatty pigments in the brain.
OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS-Inflammation of the cartilage in the joints. A form of arthritis.
PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY (PRA)-A slow deterioration of the retina, leading to blindness.
TEETH ABNORMALITIES-The number, placement, or development of the teeth is not normal.
UMBILICAL HERNIA-A tear in the muscle wall in the stomach where the umbilical cord was.
One more note on the Prozyme--Don't ever sprinkle it on hot (even warm-warm) foods---It is a live enzyme that is destroyed by cooking-high heat!

It's really depends on the vet I think, here we don't have fixed rates but just playing close to their prices...

Love her name, hope to see more pics of Delta...

I bred Aussies for years back in the 60's & early 70's. They are a very healthy breed and do not have any issues with nutrients etc. They do well on a proper balanced dog food. The breed is high energy and needs to work otherwise can be a little destructive. They can be overprotective so they do need a great deal of socialization early. The eye issue is a common trait in the breed. They share no real common health issues that standout in the GSD.
