In order to help you "change" your dog into a "good" dog, we first need to know what kinds of behaviors he is exhibiting that classify him as not so good, or at least the behaviors you want him to learn, that you have not been able to teach him.

I recommend you look at some of the online hunting magazines, and other training materials for hunting with dogs-- you may have to make your search wording specific for "hunting with a coonhound," since a lot of generic hunting dog articles are about bird dogs. I do have one question, and it is very important: Is your boy acclimated to the sound of gunshots already? If he is "gun-shy," it would be very dangerous to take a shot at a racoon with him out there. There are loads of articles that tell you how to go about this, although it would have been better to start when he was just a baby. But you can still do it, I would think-- it may take more time, is all. Hey-- good luck, and happy hunting!

I thought coons weren't shot at...I thought they were chased up a tree and the tree chopped down....but then again, my total experience with coonhounds is reading Where the Red Fern Grows....

Make sure you're wearing something brightly colored so others can tell you're hunting and you have to make sure your dog is good with commands so it'll come/stay/point to the prey, stuff like that.
I don't agree on hunting in any way, shape or form, but there have to be some websites that would help you train your dog. Redbone Coonhounds are cool looking dogs.

Well, what you need to do is google. I put in "redbone coonhound trial" and came up with plenty to look at. Here's one: Coonhound System | Outdoor Life
Have fun and good luck!
